I am based in Johannesburg, but have fished this country flat. I can put you onto some serious fishing, for Yellowfish, Trout and Tiggers.
Depend on how good a fish it is…
I have rested a fish for 30 minutes, before makeing cast number 2 at it… normaly changing the fly is also key, try changing to an emerging stage of the same insect, or go subsurface…
But often resting the pool is good enough.
If you havent spook’d the fish and it is still hard on the feed, then change the angle slightly, a step left or right might just get rid of micro drag.
Or you can create your own hatch, just keep drifting the same fly over the fish, I have seen that work pretty well on alpine trout… LOL, but it works.
I carry quite a lot of junk with me when in the mountains, it includes a light fleece, a heavy fleece, rain gear, thermal blanket, extra energy bars, the works, including snake bite kit and first aid kit. So my pack is a little loaded to start with. I have been snowed on in the middle of summer, etc…
Then I must get a Olympus DSLR, 14-54, 55-200, flash and filters…
So I drop them into their own cases and drop those into ziplock bags and then drop those into my “Patagonia” type backpack…
In theory, the pack is water resistant, the ziplock then covers anything that gets in, then into their own pouches. I also like it cause I leave the puches open, and only when I reach for my rain gear, which is under the camera, then I seal the zip locks.
What would we do without a newer better _______? And just in time for Christmas!

Went and read the other thread, very interesting, but there is another tripod thread floating around, but I can’t find it.
I think the questions for me are as follows.
1. How often will I use it? which then determines the second question.
2. What should I budget? which then determines the third questions.
3. What is available for me?Here’s my answers.
1. Seldom, but it would come in handy for longer exposures and some home work.
2. Little, as it will seldom be used.
3. El-Cheap-O’s.So I am looking around, $10 to $50, gets me a light’ish one, 2-3 lbs, OK’ish head and a little hook. Like the hook… LOL, it goes off the bottom of the centre of the tripod, and I carry a little bag with me, add a few stones, hang it on the kook and the tripod now weighs 10lbs or more.

How many rolls of film did you use to get the hang of the camera?

We had a raging debate on an other forum about having to pay to be a member, which didn’t go down to well with the members. The Internet is considered “free” for most people and paying anything is almost taboo.
However, I would quite happily pay for my online copies of a few magazines, AA springs to mind immediately, Catch is another.
But how much??? with the amount of readers that would use the online version, is $5 too little, but $10 is stretching it, well with my shocking exchange rate. I have no idea what you guys pay for a top publication, so I am just throwing it out there.
I would love to know if Brian O’Keeffe has paid his contributors for work presented in his excellent on-line publication? I know I would pay to subscribe…

It seems that Digital are considered “free” photo’s, you can just shoot till you get a good one. But I just found out that each one of these HIGH priced DSLR has a limited shutter life, and it’s nowhere near what it used to be.
I got +/- 20 000 shutter triggers left on mine, then got to buy a new one. Here I am firing away trying to learn, and using up my camera.
Forget about lenses and software, and the big one… TIME
