MemberThe run by the boulder wall is still there. It’s the pool that started just below the boulders and ran for a good ways, it’s mostly a gravel bar now. You can see the effects if high water on the little islands out from the wall and see how the river flow has been redirected

MemberYes, they were at the bottom of the lower island. There one day, gone the next. Some bruisers in the mix I mean. Absolutely not interested in eating. Lots of others were though. If you walk up there when you go, notice the left side of the island, which would actually be river right, if you have been there before, you would remember a slow shallow channel there. Most of it now is one big gravel bar now.

MemberThat is a good story. I’ve had my labs show up with an unexpected retrieve and it’ pretty neat. What kind of dog is that ? Not what I expected to see. He does look proud.

MemberZach, that was from one of the guys posting on John Wilsons website. The lake (Bull Shoals) is dropping so fast I think they will hit it if no major rain events occur. I know before I left for Idaho two weeks ago, the lake was fourteen feet above power pool. I just checked the graph and its down to four feet above power pool. Supposedly, when they reach power pool, they will cut back on generation. I’m a little mixed about that. The fishing reports say that it’s been great with the high river levels. I don’t think they will quit generating completley, but I would like to see a consistent three or four generator flow for a period of time. Of course I’d like to have a little wadeable water too. Can’t have it all!

MemberThe one I’ve used on the Little Red and then the Norfolk was Duane Hada. He was good. We sight fished with sowbugs on the Little Red and it was a real learning experience. Like someone else said, Cow shoals will be a zoo with people doing crazy things to ‘catch’ a fish. The White may be a better option. We will be there in the middle of October for a week. The COE has predicted that the water may be wadeable by the first of October on the White.

Membernot sure what you mean by a good suggestion for a journal. The last one I bought was from a gift shop out west, leather bound, rather simple other than that. This one is about full, starting it in October of 2000. I think it’s the fifth one I’ve completed. I generally keep my hunting trips in a different journal, but not always. It’s a good idea to keep a journal, over the years checking back and comparing notes, weather, river flows, hatches, bad ideas, good choices, you get the picture. I always put some photos in there as well, besides the better ones that will go into an album or whatever.

MemberKelly, thanks for the tips on the access. That’s where I believe I spent some time before. I got into some fish taking tricos and bwos. I just went back and looked at my journal entries during the last trip there which was 2003. The flow was 158 cfs and easy to wade. I do remember my wife and I having to bushwhack our way downstream along the banks because the bushes and trees were pretty thick in places. Can’t wait to get there. Again, I appreciate the help.

MemberThanks for the input everyone. Kelly, that probably answers the question about floating. Thanks for those pictures. that’s great. As far as wading access, I know of two, one at the dam and one down a little further, but I have not been to the lower one. Is there any access that’s well marked closer to Mackay ?

MemberInteresting thread. I fished from the beach off Anna Marie island two summers ago. I got pointed the right direction on snook fishing and had a ball. The next winter brought the big southern cold snaps and the snook population took a hit. The game and fish folks said “no problem” come on down the fishing should be fine. Well, it was’nt, at least not off the beaches. The shops down there said that certain classes of snook were down by seventy percent or so. We aren’t going this year, but next year I would like to get back that way. My question is, how long will it take for a good recovery of numbers. Hope someone is in the know here on the forum. Thanks?

MemberNot a regular there by any means, but have learned a lot over the past few years. It seem that the higher water, meaning more than the bottomed out level associated with periods of no generation, will bring some of the better fish out. Even if it is not a full generator, the fish aren’t as spooky. As always there, presentation is crucial. The smart brown’s insist on it. Hope you do well when you go.

MemberThe sluicing below South Holston has been good for fishing. Spent Monday thru Thursday fishing the sulphur hatch there and had a ball. The hatch is not quite what it should be yet though. Saw lots of fish up at times and some really good ones as well. I think the work at the dam is almost done and they will start releasing more water soon. Hope to float it later on.
