Wow! I had no idea rattlesnakes would swim across water like that. How hot was it Mike?
Airtemps in the 70s, water in the 60s. Most terrestial snakes can traverse bodies of water by merely sucking in a bit of air to make them more boayant. Where as an aquatic snake–garters, water snakes, moccasins, etc. will swim with their bodies slightly submerged, terrestrial snakes will swim with their bodies almost completely afloat on top of the water. It doesn’t seem to affect their speed at all, and all the bull snakes, pine snakes, etc. I’ve seem doing this seem to move very comfortably across bodies of water.
Simplfy, Subtle, and downsize.
As water clears, I don’t stop chucking streamers, but I do throw smaller, more subtle stuff.

Give this board a try. The Georgia and Alabama boards are great, but I am unfamilar with the content of the Virgina board.

Can you explain how you keep your Ulitmate BEHIND you while doing this? If it is simply tethered to you there is no way the boat isn’t “ferrying” faster than you are wading.

Normally I let the boat float downstream from me while I cast, step, cast, etc. Generally when in a straight section of the river, the boat will float at about the same rate as I am walking without pulling on the body. When moving through riffle corners and sharp bends, keeping the boat downstream allows better control of its position–keeping it out of the best lies. However, there are times when its more efficient to have the boat tethered behind you–wind, really rocky areas, etc. To do that you combine an anchor trolley with a drag chain.
When the chain is out, the boat will stay behind you. Its a little harder on the body because to move the boat you have to pull against the chain but once in a rthym, the additional resistance is nominal.

Since you are staying at Sha Sha’s, you will be quite close to a real Honey Hole on the Rainy River. Should the weather and wind get nasty so as to make fishing on Rainy Lake a bit dicey, you might want to give the Rainy River a try. It is essentially unknown except by the locals but provides a huge concentration of smallmouth and northerns in a very small area of river.
The section on the maps can be fished with any kind of boat with a trolling motor. Sha Sha’s certainly has boats that are suitable if you can tow a trailer.
The locals mostly fish it for Walleye in the deep channel near the islands just down from the dam. But from those islands down, the river is loaded with smallmouth and northerns that hangout along the shoreline in every little eddy and backwater. The smallmouth are especially stacked up around the shoals down around the first big bend in the river. My largest Minnesota Northern came from here–37″ on a big deciever.

What time did the fish start looking up for the hoppers?

At 7AM the air temp was about 55 and the hoppers were active even before the sun hit the benches.

I like that the FH allows you to stand up but it does not look like there is much storage, price is a problem, what would you recommendStuart
Kayaks are all about mobility and it appears that the Freedom Hawk is deficient in that department–speed, weight, etc. Before you invest, try an on-water comparison between the FH and the Native Ultimate boats then make your choice on speed, mobility, weight, price and ultimately the ability to stand and fish–a characteristic both have.
