Any way to target specific types of trout?

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a way to target specific types of trout over others, i.e. Browns over rainbows? From my experience it has just been a crap shoot on which will hit it first? Do browns prefer a certain type of fly or presentation than rainbows? Do browns feed in different types of water than rainbows? Any advise will help as I am taking off for an expedition in a few hours. Thanks guys

Here in MO we have both browns and rainbows. And in most areas the bows outnumber the browns about 10:1.
I have not found a specific technique or fly that allows me to target one species over the other. BUT the type of water does make a difference. I almost always catch the browns that I do catch in the calmer stretches of water that I fish. Long, slow deep pools, eddies, etc are sure to hold browns (at least in MO).

I agree with that last statement.When I fish in calmer stretches of water after a good run I will almost always catch browns over rainbows. This is also a good way to catch big browns by stripping steamers through this slower water.
browns are more tolerant of varied temperatures so fewer rainbows in warmer water
larger browns are caught at night as they are ‘meat eaters’ when they get to a certain size –> bigger streamers for browns day or night
those are two things off the top of my head with out knowing where and when you are fishing etc.
It’s an interesting question that belies the fact that countless books have been written attempting to answer it in some way or another.
