Memberbeauty justin! I use double handers from 12-14 feet overhead casting in the surf in California for striped bass. It puts a single handers to shame and then some. That looks like a sea run fish, when you mention the boca is it where the river meets the ocean or where it meets a lake? Do tell more! I have been really curious to hear about estuary fishing opportunities down there for sea runs where you would be so close to the ocean that all the fish would be as chrome as the one in your photo. Cheers -Loren

MemberHey John, do you have a Singh-Ray VND filter? They have some interesting options with a combo and trio option with warming and polarizing glass added in, damn are they pricy though.

Memberpentax has a new point and shoot, supposed to be even better than the optio, check it out at pentaximaging.com

MemberI did finally get that dust spot off luckily, and in the process learned the trick of taking at a shot of a light at F22 to see exactly what it was.
We did get really lucky with almost no winds which was great for the tailed photography. Made the fish tricky but the challenge of not spooking a bone in 5 inches of glass calm water was pretty thrilling.
Thanks again all -LE

MemberHey thank you guys!
Morsie I love those photos you just put on Blanton’s….what tele were you using for the queenie shots?
Tim, the Pentax gear really seems great for this application. Especially with the K-5 to look forward to when I can afford it, as it is supposed to be one of the hottest aps-c sensor cameras out now with its phenomenal high ISO and great sensor. What do you shoot with? Like I said I have the 16-50 F2.8 and 60-250 F4, but have been contemplating how much I would miss the extra tele reach if I switched the 60-250 F4 for the 50-135 F2.8….advantages being it is lighter and smaller, plus I have the better low light capabilities with the F2.8. The only advantage of my tele is the extra reach, but it is at the cost of a much bigger/heavier lens that is slower as well.

MemberWow that is frustrating: the EWA has a max 72mm filter size and my 16-50 is 77mm…..
Loren E.
MemberIn the US it is $275 vs $100, that is a nasty markup on the EWA.
Loren E.
MemberIn doing more research I read the dicapak uses a plastic front element while the EWA uses a higher quality glass element. Also it looks like there is the aquapac to throw into the mix!

MemberOne thing I noticed is that unlike the simms bag the stormfront doesn’t have a compatible waterproof chest pack for keeping a fly box and nippers handy. Maybe a different waterproof chest pack could be home rigged to work with it?
Loren E.
MemberI am very interested in the stormfront pack…what is the insert situation for storing camera, lenses, and accessories?
Also would those straps that look to be designed for holding a rod tube work well for a compact tripod?

MemberJohn Sherman with a schoolie in the CA delta, nothing special but I just like the composition of this one with the fisherman out of focus in the background…

MemberI love the design of the lowepro dryzone rover from what I see online, but am curious just how big it is? I am hoping normal day pack size and not borderline backpacking pack size? I am 5″10 and want a reasonable sized day pack that won’t feel like huge overkill for a body, 3 lenses, a few fly boxes, other fishing gear, lunch, water, and a small raincoat.
Any insight from one of you guys who have it? Thanks!

MemberChad, socal is the place for flatties! I haven’t fished the surf down there, but that’s the high percentage part of the state. The fish above is from Monterey. Short window in the summer when they will come shallow enough.

MemberThat’s a serious kit John! I’m curious….what are the the filters? Besides standard (UV and Circ-pol) are you carrying lots of ND filters as well?
What are in those sandisk cases? Lots of backup SD cards?
And a couple of flashes? For fill-flash for hold-up shots?
I will definitely start slow with lenses, though LBA kicks in fast. I am pretty covered between the 55 1.4 for low light and the 18-250 for versatility. The only other lens I really want is the pentax 10-17 that is super versatile because it is an obvious fisheye at 10mm but looks more like a super wide corrected rectilinear at 17, so you can get two lenses in one kind of. $350 used isn’t too steep but I am trying not to get carried away! I love the weather-sealed aspect of the Pentax system with the 55 and my K-7 body, but the other two aren’t sealed unfortunately.
30-40 pounds…wow! I guess you’re not scared away from the big telephoto lenses.
cheers -LE

MemberHey Kurt, you’d be surprised but a lot of the photo enthusiasts on the photo dedicated boards like dpreview carry 6 lenses for an outing (granted mostly smaller prime lenses, where as a fisherman would cover the same range with two zooms).
Anyways, I picked up a 55mm F1.4 lens today, of Pentax’s DA* series. I’m excited to learn this lens, should be great for low-light work. 55 might make hold-up shots a challenge, I guess I’ll just have to backup a ways.
Thanks for the welcome all, tight lines -LE
