MemberSerious bummer – I really enjoyed writing for John and before him Mike.

MemberI have been using an aquatech surf housing designed for Nikon D7000 and gotten some great images with this setup and the LP-3 dome port. It is pretty light in hand too because of the materials they use. I am attaching a few shots. I am actually selling the housing because I have upraded bodies, I will post it in the classified section now. Get in touch at LSE@sonic.net if you’re curious about this setup. Aquatech makes some awesome stuff!

Membergot a deal on a D600 body I couldn’t pass up so it is in the mail and on the way! Should be killer to pair this thing with a D7000 for when I want the reach or more DOF. Besides the dust/oil sensor issues, it has been getting really solid reviews by everyone.

MemberI have a Nikon V1 with the 10mm F2.8 pancake lens. Makes a nice little pocket camera and with the FT-1 adapter I can attach it to my Nikon 70-200 VRII AF-S and get some serious tele reach!

MemberRoy I am aware of that….the D800 when cropped will give the same resolution as my D7000s, but that is a moot point for me because I am not going to spend $3,000 on a body. I would in fact lose some reach for wildlife photography with the D600 when compared to my D7000s. If you are close enough to fill the frame anyways then great, but that is rarely the case with wildlife photography, and the reason I invested in a 120-300 F2.8 lens with a 2x teleconverter.
With the high ISO abilities and dynamic range of newer DX cameras like the D7000 and the great wide angles available like the sigma 8-16, nikon 10-24, and others, there is just not much motivation to invest in expensive and heavy full frame equipment when doing fly fishing and outdoors photography in my opinion. Just my two cents. (The nikon D600 would still be fun with the right glass though I am betting!)

MemberNikon is shaking up the industry with the 36mp D800 and now an entry level FX camera. I would be tempted to go the D600 route if it weren’t for the cost of FX glass! I own two telephoto lenses that are both FX, but lose a lot of their reach when not on DX, defeating their purpose. Then I have my DX 30/1.4, 17-55/2.8, and ultra wide angle…all DX lenses! So no full frame for me, as tempting as the idea is.

MemberI like to think of myself as an IA guy 😉 I still need to get the issue but I’ve got a piece on steelhead management and possibly one on bonefishing in the summer edition I believe. Looking forward to checking out the work by Zach, Corey, and Adam!

MemberThis trips me out Tim, I wonder if the major DSLR manufacturers will integrate this stuff eventually…that’s if we still have DSLRs and the entire market doesn’t turn to mirrorless in 10 years!

MemberNext it looks like we will get an 28mm F1.8! Love the 35, but a 28, 50, 85 set at F1.8 would be sweet. Nikon rumors tends to be pretty reliable with this stuff…later 2012 they say.

MemberReally glad to help in the decision process, I agonized over it a lot and took quite a while to end up with a system that I am really happy with. I picked up my body and lenses second hand on fredmiranda.com and got all in great condition for much less than buying new.

Memberand this one is a massive crop of a shot at 300mm with the 28-300 handheld. Maybe not the most technically exemplary photos, but some of my favorite images from those two lenses..

MemberTaken at 10mm….

MemberGordon, I have been extremely happy with the Nikon 10-24 and 28-300 combo, these two lenses are fantastic and cover everything but really low light, for which you can snag the super sharp 35mm F1.8 for $150-$175 used usually. Those two zooms cover an awesome range with very good IQ in my experience. I would definitely not trade my 10-24 for the 10.5mm fisheye. The 10-24 gives me a pretty normal field of view with a decent bit of zoom at 24mm on the crop sensor, while the 10mm end allows me to get ultra wide and do those extreme shots of fish, etc, close focusing down to a couple inches. The fisheye is a one trick pony and its own look, but that is a lens I would add down the road, not get instead of a quality wide angle zoom.
Best of all, my kit is super light and compact. I carry the D7000, 10-24, 28-300, 35/1.8, a canon 550D macro filter for attaching to the 28-300, and my ultra light benro travel angel tripod, and still have plenty of room left in my backpack for lunch, fishing gear, and an extra jacket.

MemberI have the D7000 with the 10-24, 28-300, 35/1.8, and waiting on the new 85/1.8. It is a sweet camera for sure, a fantastic crop body that I don’t see myself upgrading from for a very very long time. The dual SD car slots are sweet too!

MemberOne correction, this new lens is FX so can be shot on full frame as well
Loren E.
MemberAlso Nikon Rumors has word of the same deal happening with the FX 24mm F1.4, as apparently a DX 24mm F1.8 is in testing. That would be a sweet lens to have along on fishing trips as well!

MemberThe Benro I mentioned has a seal mechanism in the joint apparently, and supposed to be better than the paper versions that wear out pretty quickly

MemberI just purchased a Benro C-069M8 travel angel tripod kit on ebay, they are already a good deal at $305 new but they are doing a temporary price drop to $289 shipped. Here is a link… Â http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320540903808#ht_6548wt_1398
I have been after this tripod for a long time and was hoping to find a used one but nobody who has one will part with it. It is carbon fiber, comes with a ball head and quick release plate, holds over 13 pounds of weight, and get this…..with ballhead and plate it weights 1.8 pounds and folds to 13 inches in length!!
Of course it won’t be as stable as a tripod of much larger size and I don’t plan on using it when the wind is firing, but all the owners I have contacted about it and reviews I have read say it is a fantastic tripod and very similar to a GITZO minus the price of a gitzo, which is why nobody would sell theirs! It was discontinued and replaced with the 0691 model which is cool because one leg can be removed and connected with the ball head to use as a monopod, but it is longer and heavier. The discontinued model is the shortest/lightest carbon fiber tripod of its class.
Anyways, they have 7 left at that price for a little while longer! Can’t wait to get the thing, been after one for like 4 months.
