The Itinerant AnglerThe res of these cameras is also astounding. This thing takes a 6,016 X 4,016 pixel image natively. Ironically that is twice as large dimensionally as the D70’s 3,008 X 2000, even though the D70 was a 6MP camera and the D600 is a 24MP camera. Just shows how many pixels have to go into making up that area (anyone who has ever mowed a big lawn can relate to that).
That translates to a 20 X 13 inch image natively at 300dpi, which means I can finally turn in double truck images that will need no enlargement (this was becoming a major handicap). Most fly fishing magazines don’t print at 300 dpi, either. In American Angler’s resolution of roughly 225 dpi, that would be a 26″ X 18″ image (roughly), which actually means I could run a double truck shot from a PORTRAIT (magazines are 17″ wide) without enlargement. Which is very nice for those times when you just didn’t get the camera oriented right before something happens.
I can’t imagine dealing with the D800’s 36MP. Talk about an enormous file.

Roy ConleyMemberZach, if you get the 70-200 be sure to get a version II as this lens was optimized for FX bodies.

Roy ConleyMemberDid you get the D600 like Zach did?

The Itinerant AnglerSo I have a few questions actually that maybe you guys can answer.
It looks like Nikon abolished Mass Storage mode in USB directly to the camera.

Roy ConleyMember1st, I always take the card out, never ever had any issues. The D600 uses SD cards which are easy to clean the contacts on. Just clean them annually when you clean your lens and body electrical contacts.
2nd, some DX lenses, primarily wide angle, will provide a full FX image. I suspect that the image size varies by the zoom setting. Look at the metadata and see if as focal length went up the image size went down.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Roy –
I’ve been using the 12-24mm DX f/4 in FX mode on the body.

J A Y M O R RMemberOne of these days maybe Nikon will release a true pro build body in the smallest possible SLR size; that would be a great camera.
Zach
They did.

The Itinerant AnglerThat is not anything like a small SLR, Jay.

David AndersonMemberHi Zach, good choice.
From what I read, the dynamic range of the D600 is very good as is it’s high ISO image quality.
The fact it’s full frame and 24 mp’s will mean it’s not forgiving of poor technique, but that, IMHO makes us work harder to get great shots and better photographers.🙂

Membergot a deal on a D600 body I couldn’t pass up so it is in the mail and on the way! Should be killer to pair this thing with a D7000 for when I want the reach or more DOF. Besides the dust/oil sensor issues, it has been getting really solid reviews by everyone.
