    John Michael –

Very interesting about the group that meets there. I’d spoken in the past with Kevin, but he’d left the magazine before I got the chance to get up to Austin to review my portfolio with him. Seems a good guy.

I’ll have to try to make my way up there one meeting and sit in.

    Thanks Kendal.

How is that South Texas shoot for the Valley Land Fund Photo Contest (isn’t this the contest you are doing?)  going?  I have read about it and talked to the guy that started it at a photog meet here in Austin.  It sounds like a really cool contest.

For those who haven’t heard, the Valley Fund Contest http://www.valleylandfund.com/  pairs up ranches in South Texas with photographers, and has what I believe is the largest nature photo contest in the world (and best prize money if I remember correctly).  The goal is to protect and promote bird/wildlife habitat in the Rio Grande Valley as it gives the ranchers a reason to value and set aside parcels of land for the contest to protect wildlife.  And of course, in the contest, the team of the photographer/ranch they are assigned to are represented and share in the prize money.

I wish I’d have been able to enter this year, but I didn’t. I’m hoping next though.

That’s a tremendous contest – and the cause is just as they say.

No – I was shooting whooping cranes for the Nature Conservancy this past week. Finally got the buggers, but I am dissatisfied with the behavior captured, and will be going back towards the end of March, when they’re more engaged in mating dances, territorial disputes, and the like.

I bet your meeting with the guy who started that contest was really interesting! Lucky you.

    They do to me John.

Hey Jay – you’ll appreciate this – cruising I see a male harrier making its way up the ditch towards me, and I try to pull that big mamajama 500mm up and out the window.

I have lovely *very* blurry shots of a passing harrier now.

in reply to: 3 Seconds #70084

    Love it man!

There’s nothing like putting effort into something and finally having it pay off, is there?

Really – well done man – well done.

I too have been smitten by those birds – and today I’m hoping to spy a couple of raptors while wandering Brazos Bend state park. I’d be south chasing the cursed whooping cranes for the Nature Conservancy again, but the weather is decidedly ugly, so I’ve postponed that until Friday when there’s a fair weather window opening again.

Oh – and Jay – I rented a 500mm Canon F4 IS from LensRentals.com for this trip – I’ve been very pleased so far with their service. Just an FYI for you guys who are like me, and not yet able to plop down $6k for a lens.

    Awesome Matt.

When I see stuff like that, it makes me even more certain of the work I do now, as I *know* that as time passes, someone will at some point look back and say, “Wow – that must have been cool.”

Not as funny as you might think John.

Ted’s often down here – tight in fact with the guys who publish Texas Fish & Game magazine (even contributes off and on).

    It’s possible it’s Ted’s place.

Bloody hell – this will teach me to write notes here when I’m in a hurry.

What a MEANT to write was that I don’t send anything BUT hi-res images. When I’m sending proofs, I only provide them in a flash gallery (via Lightroom) so they’re only able to review the images.

Then, if they’ve a few that they want, I export the hi-res to an accessible webpage that they can right-click save-as on. So far that’s worked really well for me.

Er – that is, unless the publication has an FTP – which seems generally to be the case now.

Anyway – it does suck, but you’ve got the right attitude, so you should be good to go.

in reply to: ahhh bummer… #69923

    Sucko.

I rarely send hi-res out anymore unless it’s been fully edited, largely to avoid possible situations like this.

Seriously though – sorry to hear man.

in reply to: Deep in the Heart… #69933

oh yes – I’m jealous of your opportunity I am.

First snow globing, and now trout schlong.

I am getting quite an education here.

    😉

Seriously though – very, very well done guys.

    Corey –

Just got my “Trout” in the mail on Saturday. Meant to add my congratulations again then.

It’s a pleasure to see the work of the photographers here in hand – a real pleasure.

…and just another quickie update; ol’ CG is home – just 3 days after a quad by-pass.

    Amazing.

    And – wonderful news.

    Great job Lee   🙂

Spent more time watching – that’s *exactly* the kinda stuff that I miss about the north.

That you’ve made me want to get up there and chase those bad mamajamas with the long stick should tell you that your video efforts succeeded.

    And killer music too!

    Hey Matt –

There was a recent thread related to this – with a cheap USB device. Try a search for that – it was during the second half of 2009, if I recall correctly, and I think there were a couple of good answers in there.

Cheers guys – and more good news is that CG is doing very well post-surgery.

All good news at the turn of the new year – love it.

LMAO – well, snowglobing isn’t something for which the meaning I’d have expected to learn here.

Heh – you just never know….
