Here’s one of my favorites developed for my home waters, but it’s proven to be a killer everywhere I go:
KG’s South Fork Special
Hook: DaiRiki 125 size #14
Thread: 8/0 Olive/Dun
Bead: Copper 3/32 – two to three wraps of .015 non-lead wire tucked under bead
Tail: 8-10 Pheasant-tail fibers – natural or dyed olive
Rib: Chartreuse UTC wire – small
Abdomen: Ice Dub – pearl (not red hue)
Thorax: Ice Dub – olive brown
Wingcase: Pheasant-tail fibers pulled forward from tail
Wing/Legs: Olive Hen Feather
P.S.: Just don’t let it near whitefish 😎

Kelly, how the hell did you know about two broken sticks? Yeah, we busted my scott S3 906-3 and a Dan Bailey 9 foot 7wt. The scott has been all over the place, and was hit with a streamer earlier this year. I knew it was a time bomb eventually. My buddy put the wood to a major hopper taker and busted it on the set. The dan bailey busted because of a loose ferrule.
And I broke a pair of smith glasses.
But the fishin was good!
Juan, thats an interesting perspective- the Hopper Juan is everywhere you want to be. Thanks for the fly, and tying instructions on your blog- It was THE pattern to have, and I’m sure we were the guys that had it….Not once did that fly foul or land funny. Its a great and easy tie.

Craig, I’m a strong advocate of your method of ‘twisting’ my own leaders. I’ve fished them in Alaska for silvers, and other species and would never be caught on any of my local Idaho waters without one. No jig, no formulas, just practical, easy-to-construct and very effective leaders.
