Mike, the Big Lost is one of my favorites, but if you’re going the middle of September the river may be too low for a float, but just right for some of the best wade fishing of your life. We fish this river a lot from the dam down through the town of Mackay. In all of my years of fishing this river I have never seen a boat on this river, but I only fish it from September through spring until they bump the water up for the irrigators. I would check the Westfly website for stream flow info as well as current reports http://www.west-fly-fishing.com/cgi-bin/showGraphs?station=941&range=month
Small is the key when it comes to flies. Lots of different hatches, but mostly midges and BWO’s by the time you’ll be there. I fish both on top as well as dragging a three-nymph rig through promising holes. The fish aren’t huge (mostly bows), but there are a few 20+ inchers as well as a few brook trout.

I use a Pentax Optio W90, and my son uses the Pentax Optio WS80. Great cameras, great underwater for a P&S and I do all of my close-up fly shots with it also.

Lando, the only advice I’ve got for you ought to help a bunch – stop drinking and shooting photos at the same time – the two don’t mix, brother… 😎

Kelly, did you use the camera for showing your tying and if so was the depth of field?
I’m just a tad concerned being that it states that it is a document camera with possibly a DOF too narrow for tying by focusing on just a thin slice of fly!Thanks
Jack, the DOF was perfect for fly tying applications. Like I said, they set it up for the first time and we were under way in a matter of minutes. Excellent pic quality as projected through the overhead projector the library provided. Very, very simple as compared to some of the answers you’ve received. I was impressed enough that I’m buying one to showcase my own tying for presentations and such when I’m on the road.
Sometimes just a simple solution may be the best option…

I tied and gave a PowerPoint presentation at the club meeting for the Upper Snake River Fly Fishers in Rexburg, ID two weeks ago and they had just purchased a cool little camera that they hooked up to the laptop and then sent it through the system at the Library where we were meeting. The live feed was next to perfect and the projected image on the wall was very clear and made it possible for all in attendance to view from the cheap seats!
