Man, that thread has generated some heat… 😎
You know, it’s probably a good thing, since I seemed to have stuck myself in the middle of it anyway 😉
Anyway, here goes…
On another forum site (I know those here don’t think there are any other forums out there ::) ), there was a post by a local guy in southeast Idaho (Lando, I wonder who that might be… 8-))who took some incriminating pics of a Teton Valley Lodge (located in Driggs, Idaho) boat, guide and two dudes as they were fishing the closed section of the lower Henry’s Fork near the Ora Bridge launch, just the day before yesterday!. This section opens the Saturday before Memorial Day to protect vital Rainbow spawning habitat. Anyway, here are the pics:
Taken today above Ora boat ramp. It is closed to fishing until the end of the month.
Guide and dudes:

His rig:

Well, I fired off an e-mail to these guys, asking for an explaination and here is their response along with a copy of what I sent them:

What the heck are you guys up to! There are pics of your boat, guide and dudes fishing at Ora Bridge on the lower Henry’s Fork this past week posted on the Westfly Forum site. Any guide and or shop worth it’s salt should know where and when waters are closed to fishing. The water below Ashton Dam to Vernon bridge is closed until the Saturday before Memorial Day. Which state are you guiding in, or rather which planet? This really ticks me off. Please explain yourselves…
This was their response:
Gordon,
“Yes, we had a boat put in at Ora yesterday. It was a simple mistake and they took out immediately. There was no malicious intent, just a mistake.”
“…just a mistake” I figure I pay an outfitter to know what’s going on in his own backyard. Where did these guys come from and how do they maintain a license? As far as “taking out immediately” to get where they were photographed, they had been in the water for a while, as well as having everything rigged up and clients fishing.
Just sayin…
Anyway, the owner of the lodge came on to defend the actions, but it truly ballooned out of control and not in his favor. I appreciate that we all make mistakes, but for a licensed guide and outfitter to either not know or blatantly disregard current regs and take paying clients to poach closed waters (in his own backyard) is downright criminal. From what I’ve heard, it sounds as though the law has been notified and heads are rolling.
I’m not trying to stir things up, but I think it’s important for the paying public and all sportsmen to know when something like this has taken place. These guys know better and it appears they didn’t care. This time they got caught. They have a poor reputation for disregarding regs and have been caught fishing other closed waters before. They give a bad name to the good guy outfitters and guides who keep it above board.
Anyway, there you have it.
Lando, how’d I do? Please fill in the blanks…
Kelly.

MemberYou did great. I am still hot over this and it just strengthens the bad taste that this operation has left in my mouth.

Kelly GlissmeyerMemberYo, Lando, it appears that everyone here must be asleep.

MemberI will bash………I will bash away. I am sure that you could share several personal experiences you have had with this group of outfitters. What bothers me is their blatant disregard for the resources and completely untrue reports.
You just got back from the Big Horn and had a great two days, right? Did you get anywhere near 211 fish/day?
B.S. I am glad that they finally got caught but I don’t think that the penalty will fit the crime.

Kelly GlissmeyerMemberWell, duh… ;D
I am sending a PM as we speak.
As far as TVL green boats are concerned, my son and I floated the Ora to Chester stretch (during the open season 8-)) and ran into a section just out of the upper cliffs where there were four guide boats stretched across the top of a good riffle run and we barely were able to squeak by one of the parked boats in a relatively open lane that was about 30-feet wide and the guide in the TVL green boat cussed us as we passed for messing up his fishing – it was the only water available to float downriver! It appears you’ve stirred a hornet’s nest and they deserve every bit of it and then some. I hope they get their summer season of dudes cancelled due to this fervor and your vigilance. Oh crap, there I go again – danged soapbox, shouldn’t have been left out in my way anyhooo…

MemberFrom another forum, thought you might get a kick out of this!
Adam Barry Says:The previous posts are obviously from guys who don’t like my family. I no longer work with my family at the lodge and can’t speak for them but my guess is that they may guide for some of our “competition” in the area, if you can call them that. Probably tired of having their clients asking them why the guys in the green boats seem to have a fish on every time they see them. Sorry you confuse our confidence for arrogance. It is easy to be an elitist when you are elite. We all know we are the best in the area and have been since 1919. The guides that are let go from the lodge for not working hard enough go on to be head guides at any other outfitter in the area.
On the spawning beds comment, check out the vid on tetonvalleylodge.com/blog. None of these fish were caught on reds. The browns aren’t even on the reds in January. Every fish caught in this video was on a streamer and the big fish was caught in the middle of the river using a swing drift.
We look at fishing different than a lot of people. It isn’t about being on the river, or having a nice day, the beauty of the fish. None of that. We are about catching the most and biggest fish possible on any given day. Anyone who tells you that it isn’t about catching fish can’t catch them.
If you want to see more of us crushing ’em on the South Fork or the other rivers in the area check out tetonvalleylodge.com.

MemberThanks Kelly and Lando for your work in exposing these guys. I have nothing good to say about the green boats. And Mikes quote of Adam’s response says all I need to know about them.

Sorry, Mike if I offended, but when this happens on your home waters you tend to take it personal.

MemberUnfortunately this is not surprising to me. When Lando lived in the area I would fish with him quite a bit. I don’t really remembering having a bad experience on the river with anyone, except the “Green Boats of TVL”. I am glad someone caught them. TVL is one of the operations that give guides a bad name. Hopefully some action is taken.
For me fishing is all about being on the river, having a nice day, the beauty of the fish, and just enjoying myself. Sure I like to catch fish and big ones if I can, but that is definitely not the only reason I enjoy my time on the water.May 12, 2010 at 7:29 pm #43226
Bob RigginsMemberI’m not really suprised at the lack of interest.

Kelly GlissmeyerMemberSorry, sometimes I forget that this forum is spread out across a big area.

MemberI didn’t take the photos………..just passed them on to others. So Mike Anderson, the reason I posted the information here is so that folks all over the fishing world knows what a low class operation TVL is…………and I would hope that if anyone every wanted to get a guide from the SE Idaho area, they would never think of booking a trip with these guys.
