MemberThanks guys.
John Im planning on picking up a rattle bag in time for this weekend. Couple guys have cautioned me it will scare smaller Bucks away though, and might only draw in the big boys. Sort of a use them if I want a go big or gome home empty morning.
Another has said it will be good to use if I want to get facial and body language reactions out of Bucks after getting a few shots. Meaning if they haven’t spooked or I haven’t been busted taking a few shots and then I want to get a strong reaction from said Buck to give a good rattle.
Figure that will be worth it.
I haven’t seen rattling scare ANY bucks away, small or large. I have drawn in lots of spikes while rattling as well as large bucks. I personally like the actual antlers rather than the bags, but do what you think is the easiest and gives the best sound.
When rattling, I keep a good eye out, and try to keep my movement hidden. Don’t be afraid to rattle them loudly and really get after it….10 – 15 secs at a time.

MemberJohn,
Nice pics of those bucks.
If you aren’t doing this already, get a set of antlers, or fake antlers made for rattling, and use those to simulate two bucks fighting over a doe. Rattling antlers will call in all the big boys in the area, and at the time they are rutting, they will litterally come running at full bore. I also use a grunt call, but the antlers have given me the best results, even without the grunt call. This is a highly successful technique used here in Texas, and I am sure you have seen it on hunting shows and used elsewhere. It really does work.

MemberShanon, I noticed you’re in Denton. I was born and raised in Denton until I went off to college. Yes, the Guad is running exremely low right now…about 56 cfs.
Matt, that would be cool to hook up sometime to fish and get some photos on the Guad.
Olle, good eye on the horizon being slightly off. I have adjusted the horizons and have reposted them on my website and below. For some reason, the larger links won’t update here on IA.
Update: It looks like the larger picks above in the first link finally updated.

MemberThere are many folks on this forum more knowledgable than me, but a simple answer is that the JPEG image is porcessed by the camera, so you are seeing the end reslut the way the camera chose to process the image.

MemberGot one today. This guy had some teeth! 🙂
Love this time of year .. The colors are stunning!

Corey, something about this pick says “Gaurd Dog” to me. Awesome job. This should be on a cover somewhere if you have a vertical version. Otherwise, a full page spread would do nicely ;D.

MemberI like a little of it all as well. I like to learn, so anything new and technical is interesting. I’m really into photography, so I drool over the big glossies. I think the number one reason I read magazines is because I LOVE flyfishing, but don’t get to go as much as I would like. Even though I get to go fairly often in season, I don’t have the luxury of living on the water day in and day out. Thus, I read and look at the fly fishing magazines so I can “fish and be on the water” vicariously. I don’t really read destination pieces as much anymore….some are interesting, but 99% I will never visit. Some I enjoy because it expands my horizons, and I learn more about the world and our country, and what they have to offer, and it is nice to get a taste since I probably won’t ever see them in person. Nowadays I tend to read more lifestyle. I for one love the American West, so I could look at it all day long.
I agree that this board has a wealth of info, which is why I was specificaly drawn to it, as well as the podcasts/music, and photography forum.
As far as mags I subscribe to (don’t mean to knock the others, these are just the ones I have chosen):
Fly Fishing and Tying Journal – gets the techie stuff covered
The Drake – makes me laugh outloud and covers the lifestyle and great photography
Gray’s Sporting Journal – Great photography/fine art and a more literary approach which I appreciate
Trout– I peruse it and it keeps me informed on conservation issues, etc. Some I agree with, some I don’t. I read it criticaly and make my own conclusions.

MemberCurrently I have a 10D and would think we are dealing with similar settings here. If you shoot RAW (I use the Adobe RGB RAW), at least on the 10D, you can not adjust the parameters. The +4 or -4 parameters you can set in camera only affect the JPEG files (and modes you shoot in that produce only JPEG files). I think this may be your issue.
When I get my RAW images into DPP, I usually bump the saturation up several notches. Then I do a copy recipe and paste it to all the rest of the images.
