John BennettMemberIm not aware of any single macro resource with an emphasis on fly tying. If Zach doesn’t mind the plug you might want to check out Troutnuts website, he may have some tutorials and tips.
Macro potography is certainly not an aspect one picks up right away, it’s certainly not my strength. To add to or reinforce some of Labratis points I’ll add the following. DoF and lighting are probably the two most important considerations. At the risk of stating what you may already know starting with DoF its razor thin, especially if using a 1:1 lens. Many makers (notably sigma) market lenses as being “macro” which arent really macro lenses in the classic definition (1:1), but rather they are lenses that allow for close focusing.
for example using a 180mm Macro
at its MFD even at f/16 your effective DoF is going to be less than 1/5th of an inch. At two feet and f/22 the DoF is 1/10th of an inch.read razor thin.
Using your lens for example zoomed to 200mm which sems to have a MFD of 1.6 feet and from 3ft your looking at about a DoF of 7/10ths an inch.
DoF calculator
http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.htmlWhere am I going with this?
Its going to almost impossible to get a single entire #8 hook within your DoF if your close to the MFD even at f/22 without focus stacking. You can back off creating more DoF, but that comes at a cost of reduced detail. Just for informational purposes I struggle to get #18s (with hackles) entirely within the DoFSecondly unless your under very bright lighting shooting between f/16 and f/22 is going to kneecap your Shutter Speeds. A good Tripod with either a cable release or self timer is virtually a must.
From looking at the photo light is definately not on your side. If you really want to do this type of shooting you might want to consider a DIY light box or a commercially available one.
Some glass options you can consider might be Sigmas 105mm f2.8 macro, a set of tubes or Nikons close focus adapter (basically a filter). Keep in mind tht anything that allows you get closer to the subject like tubes or a close focus filter will have greater impact on your DoF.
John BennettMemberWe’re getting our worst storm of the winter today. Heavy snow fall, high winds, and then freezing rain later this aft/eve.
John BennettMemberIm Canon Labrati. Currently with
24-70 f2.8 L
85 f1.8
180 f3.5 macro
400 f5.6LI intend to add the 70-200 f2.8L IS to complete my lineup. I can only get so much past the warden though ๐ so any new lens purchases are for down the road when the times is right, unless I want to sleep on the couch for a few months ๐
then after that I can try to figure out how to get a 500 past her
;D
John BennettMemberIt could be a fantastic lens for sports shooters. The zoom unlike primes will enable them compose as the action draws near or moves away and perhaps more importantly it offers f2.8. Compare that say to the 500 f4.
If I had to cover some twilight, night games maybe like soccer/football I might be all over a lens like that. Fast enough that you can open the lens as wide as youd need to freeze the action and versatile enough that you can shoot at 200mm one minute and 500mm the next as the action goes down field.
Few if any zooms are available in fast glass. I know from trying todo my daughters gymnastic where I use an 85 f1.8, the one thing I dont like is the fixed focal length. Sometimes shes too close and sometimes too far for the 85 but its the only glass I have thats fast enough to use for indoor sports.
John BennettMemberA bit greek to me but here goes. Quad core, 2 gig ram, Vista platform w/ 24inch lcd.
Processing.
Photosop7 and ACR (through elements 6.0). Trial period on CS3 just ended, will move to that immeninently.Storage
500gig HDD. back up to two 200gig external HDs, which in turn get backed up to DVD.
I try to do my backups periodically although if I have a critical folder that gets backed up immediately.I do everything by calender quarter. So at the onset of a new quarter, a new folder is created on the HDD, the just completed quarter is backed up and the oldest quarter on the HDD gets a weeding out, backed up, and burned to DvD
John BennettMemberCan’t speak to salt water but I guess it would say it depends as with Salt you might very well be casting from a platorm, in wind and need distance, but Im honestly a bit surprised.
All the guides Ive used are certified (in fact id problably wouldnt book with a guide whos not certified and that includes CPR) ย ;D and have no problems if/when you ask them to keep an eye on aspect you might be having trouble with. Meaning, when you book make it clear that that youd either like some intruction or to keep an eye for an obvious problem in the stroke.
meaning
If I wanted to arange a day and for whatever reason wanted to correct an aspect or work on my double haul (for example) and the guide balked, he wouldnt get my business then or later.Lessons certainly are worthwhile and pound for pound better, but you can arrange that as well. Every outfitter I know offer “Learn to” which is half/half dry land and on the water. Where they cover everything from entomology, to knots, to casting and finish with a couple hours on the water.
John BennettMemberFor self teaching and correcting sexy loops is a nice web site.
My best advice would be to book some time on the water with a guide. You get a .5 day or full day of guided fishing, and they can help you to work on your casting to boot ๐ its a win/win and something I try to do atleast once every year.
John BennettMemberI remember seeing that a few months ago. 34 pounds not mention what kind of support you’d need.
OuchThe new 150-500 OS/HSM looks intriguing as well, although I’m not crazy about the f5-6.3. Thats a bit slow for my liking.
John BennettMemberNo kidding Zack, the prices are coming down a ton.
Currently I have one 4gig, three 2gig, and two 1gig Extreme III cards. I belong to the school of thought that despite the inconvenience smaller cards are “safer”. Meaning if you were to lose or destroy a card, better it happen to 2gigs worth of images, than an 8gig card.
The 1gig card I paid $130.00 for a couple years ago. I paid the same for the 4gig card about 8 months ago and I think today they sell for around $90.00.
One problem a camera like the Sony is likely going to have should someone want to take full advantage of the fps is how fast it writes to the card and clears the buffer.
John BennettMemberThe 1DMKIIN +400 +1.4 is controllable with entended burst. I rarely do it prefering 3-5 shot burst typically, but there have been occasions where Ive taken extended burst of 8-16frames. No doubt though that it can jump like a jack hammer. Using a Bushhawk pays dividends for that Im sure.
Ive seen some good GIF animation of Birds of Prey swooping in on kills that are anywhere from 8 to 16frames that were taken with the MKIIN and 400s or 500s.
Back when Barry Bonds hit his record breaking HR, there was a SI shooter who wired 3 MKIIIs and synched them, such that the 3 produced 30 fps. It may as well have been a vid camera. Hard to tell from the vid but it looks like he’s using 500 f4s or maybe the 600s, but it sure sounds sweet.
John BennettMemberThat was one of my first thoughts to labrati, that things going to be a beast at 6.5fps 25mp. Anyone catch the buffer size in the release? With the MKIIN
John BennettMemberWas just reading the release.
With Nikon seemingly holding out on their new FF and Canon not delivering on the much rumored 5D replacement, this certainly sounds like a shot across the bow.
Zach, I thought I read somewhere that Nikon was producing their own chips for the D3s dont quote me though)
John BennettMemberId wait and see what develops (if anything) as well for that kind of cost to service them Zack. Want to point out thought that a friend of mine slipped and landed in some mud the week he got his MarkIII. The body initially worked fine and showed no sign of problems. It died a few days later, his 500mm f4 mounted at the time was and still is functioning perfectly.
I don’t imagine his broker was too happy about that one
John BennettMemberYou should look into having your gear on a rider.
Generally speaking if its under your homeowners theres no certainty it will be covered should you braincramp. Where as Riders for the most part are no fuss replacement. Also, there are other considerations like deductibles and premium increases if you do submit claims.Zach.
At $17/month for your body you might want to shop around anyways, thats pretty expensive. I pay $110/year and thats for over 7G worth of replacement coverage. Granted, we live in different countries but I often see reference to around 100/year both north and south of the border.
John BennettMemberAnother vote for Aqua stealth.
I switched to Simms AS after my dog chewed my leather felt soled boots apart 3 seasons ago ad have fallen in love with them. You probalby should give alot of thought to the environs you typically wade but atleast in my case Ive havent yet been in a situation where I missed my felt soles.
I do alot hiking sometimes to get to the stream and theres simply no comparison. AS boots are infinitely lighter dry, let alone wet once the felt starts absorbing stuff and I think the studs are better suited to hiking (ak crossing deadfalls, going upslope tc).
As pointed out the studs will trash decking. I have a cedar deck that I cross to get to the stream behind my house and theres no way Id ever cross it with the boots on.
With regards to the comment about felt being a perfect medium for transferring bacteria.
I’d have to think so, we’re being advised to get in the practise of washing down waders after a day.
Id have to think felt soles are that much more susceptible to transfering.
John BennettMemberMark…great link…and as much as I would like to win this photo contest…I refuse to get the “Itinerant Angler” Man tattoo’ed on my arm! ย HA…
Lol.
I have a Brown tat on my left shoulder, Im sure I could have “IA” henna’d above it and do a self portrait. Will that count?
John BennettMemberLooks to me like the photographer took your typical trophy shot and then visualised the comp with the dorsal extended. Rather than have the gent change his grip and do it, he just reached out, lifted it and took the shot.
John BennettMemberMy 2c
Pick up a Pentax WP for about $300.00. Small enough to fit in a pocket, good enough for the shots your DSLR cant do, cheap enough not to worry about it, no fussing about with housing etc.
John BennettMemberLol funny Zach ๐
Anytine our forecast is snow and its 4 inches I’m releived. Luckily this is shaping up to be another mild winter here and we’ve only had 1 big dump. However, the idea of tooning on snow, thats original ๐
Might work as a tobogan but 1) I woundnt want to get bounced out and 2) more importantly, I wouldn’t want to be the the one lugging it back up hill. Where it could be alot of fun is on an iced in lake and with a parasail./deit
btw I imagine there were alot of accidents if you got the snow, yes? How rare is it there?
John BennettMemberMy 2c that areprobably worth less than 2c as my hunting days are long behind me. I was going to suggest not overlooking a side by side but someone beat me to the punch. On the few occassions I went birding I used both O/U and side bys. While I preferred the O/U the side by was nice to. Not sure Id want to use a pump for that style. I guess with practise you can get quick enough but there are/were occassion when I had to fire in quick succession when on the wing an Im not sure I could do that with a pump, even when I was practised.
Dogs.
Not sure Id want to take an untrained or gun shy dog into the field. I still remember one day when one of the party brought a new dog out. It was good at flushing but had a bad habit of leaping into the air after them. I was fortunate enough to recognise it was leaping as I was getting the partridge in m sights and its head ended up square in my sights just as I was about to pull the trigger. Would have been my fault but its not something you need or want to have happen.Take up Falconry ๐ You can satisfy the desire to do some small game/bird hunting and develop a bond with a Bird of Prey at the same time.
j/k its a huge commitment -
