Actually thinking about a fall trip to one of Ontarios Musky meccas this year. Too early to know for sure but hopin it comes together.Did you get that eye on the fly?
Hoping to do that opener this year (2nd Sat May) as well.Kinda agree Will, the hook damage is its biggest fault, whether or not I send it anywhere….dunno. I normaly sit on photos for a couple months, often revisting before deciding anything.
Normally end up deleting bottom/up perspectives almost automatically, but I like the way its head/face jumps out, which starts from the edge of the flared gill, moves along the underside of the jaw, and carries you up and forwards, thats almost 3 dimentional. I’ve scores of traditional similiar shots that are more top/downish, but the “pop”and separation of the face, isnt nearly as well defined. .
Either way definately going to play with it further.
With the shot itself I went for a perspective from underneath. Essentially showing the whites of its underside, vs the colours and patterning of it’s back.
Generally speakings thats against the grain.
Processing I played around with adjusting the light in a way that would be best be described as vignetting, but not quite. Sublely changing “light values” in different areas of the photo.
Now that I’ve had some time to digest it, and come back to it I see a couple minors flaws that need correctng :). Love digital
I have a seal line dry bag I use on occassion, namely when Im chasing Musky/LM out of my canoe and want my camera with me with 1 lens.
It works well enough, and I have no worries about moisture. It is a royal pain to extract the camera and carry around. As a product they are very popular with canoeist/kayaker/trippers.
If you can live with the inconvenience of it……

Actually it irks me as well for the same reasons.

Deleted probably 20 to 30.
Not because they weren’t nice, or technicals (exposure, sharpness etc) weren’t good or anything but because ones, much the same as the next.My culling procedures are pretty brutal and ruthless.
I kept this one over the others because
a) The BG is nice
b) It shows the entire snake (no elements bird or snake clipped)
Yeah it’s possibly my favorite as well, along side one of the 3 above.

I was in a bit of a funk through much of Feb/March. Up here in the frozen north theres not much to go after. It’s only been the last week or two I’ve been invigorated to get out and shoot stuff with a purpose.Turkey Season opens in 4 weeks ( already hae some great Tom pics) and Trout opens the same week.
As a side note just got Aprils issue tonight and I have the cover (steelhead) and a full page inside (preseasonsteelhead) and some Turkey hunting related stuff.
Its enough to motivate me 🙂
Yeah, there foreground flies are very distracting. Outside of that I really like it.
Lights good and it looks like you vignetted it a bit? Like that touch to.
If you cared t re-shoot it, i’d probably like to see the main arrangment in the bottom right intersection per rule of thirds and then the back ground flies, almost like a crumb trail taking us up and out of the frame. Sort of what of you already have, but just change your critical focus to the lower (front) flies.

Will we have resident RTs and Coopers but also get migrants. This guy is som tame though, noone can figure it out. I went back to get more of him this morning and there was a huge crowd shooting him. I guess after posting some of this on the photogrpahy website I frequent word got out a bit 🙂
Pound for pound the flash will do more for you.
Further, there are things you can do that proxy as a tripod, where as you can’t proxy a flash. The cheapest and easiest is a bean bag and cable release (10 second timer if you dont have a release).
It takes years to amass all the things you want/need. I’ve been at it years and while I’ve gotten my major purchases out of the way, the list of yet to acquire items is as long as my arm.

Yeah, it’s a struggle.
So many variables to contend with and alot of hours sitting waiting possibly on nothing if theres no insect activity 🙂 Been there, done that 🙂 Then you get the days when you have the time and you get a hatch but nothings in range, or fish arent rising 🙂 Then you get the days where it all comes together including sunlight and the fish/bugs get active and then you think to yourself.What the help am I doing, theres big fish rising to dries and Im watching it???????

Seriosuly the biggest hurdle here is water clarity. Only a few small streams are clear enough that you get to see the trout rising in time and they tend to be Brookies. Where I fish for Browns its not as clear and they normally hit fast, by he time they register with youreye and you hit the shutter its happened. :'(.The hard part is the waiting, and hoping for a rise in clear enough water. Got everything but clear water, few of our streams get that clear, so seeing them as they come up is difficult 🙂

Re lenses.
The perfect lens might be the Canon 100-400 L. 400mm with a MFD of 6 feet. Another good lens might be the 300mm f4, its MFD is about 4 to 5 feet I beleive.This year I plan on trying again with the 500mm f4 and 66mm in tubes. Should get the MFD down to around 6 or 7 feet.
Depending on the software program your using most
auto corrections, except under high contrast situations do a decent job.My guess is the software looks the WB and the histogram, which is a graphical representation of the tonal values between 0 and 255 and goes from ther.
With regards to what it does, it makes adjustments to lighting (exposure), colour cast (White Balance), levels and contrast and perhaps saturation and or sharpening.
