IMHO, I would say get the flash and a cheaper tripod.

Pound for pound the flash will do more for you.

Further, there are things you can do that proxy as a tripod, where as you can’t proxy a flash. The cheapest and easiest is a bean bag and cable release (10 second timer if you dont have a release).

It takes years to amass all the things you want/need. I’ve been at it years and while I’ve gotten my major purchases out of the way, the list of yet to acquire items is as long as my arm.

    Carbon fibre tripod
    RRS BH55 ball head
    Singh Ray blue gold
    Singh Ray variable nd
    and on
    and on

prioritising when you cant proxy is the only way to get through it

Hey Matt, I am not sure but I think that I may know you from the Smith River, a few years back. Anyway, I have the perfect solution for you: Purchase a tripod that will support your camera and lens. As far as the SB 600, don’t worry about it as one in perfect condition, with original boxes and documents, will be mailed to you next week. For free!! 🙂

I don’t use it often and only have it as a backup to all of my other hotshoe strobes. I kind of need to make room in the hotshoe case and I would rather you have this one for your childs first birthday photo’s. If you are the same Matt, that I am thinking about, I know that your father, mother and uncle will love getting slammed with daily photograph’s :).

Email me your address and I will send it next week, I have a location assignment in Atlanta this weekend and may need it, doubt it but want to take it until I replace it. I shoot fast and furious and the recycle time is just to slow, compared to the other strobes so, enjoy it. 🙂

I agree with John, a flash is a priority and you should have a good one.
Having enough power to do big daylight fills or big indoor areas is important.

With tri-pods you can get away with a cheap one for most situations, but if you want to do merging, stacked focus or stitching, a heavier set of legs with a good head is more important.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.
