UofA alumni. FIJI. Left in 1993. Loved Feyetteville, had a blast with plenty of partying on Dixon St. Probably should have done more fishing when I was there. The Angler’s Den on the Square, Duane Hadda’so store in Fort Smith. All very simple back then!

    Scooooby Dooooo…………..
I’m on my second Outback…love it, so does the wife.
I still have a Defender which is the dogs favourite, probably because it means we’re going shooting, but not a vehicle for long distances etc.
I’ve had a couple of Range Rovers (classic) and loved those, but really can’t get on with the new shapes, nor their “Chav’y” appeal!
The Outback has gone places I couldn’t believe – a Landcruiser with BFG ATs on struggled to follow the OB with highspeed tyres on!
I also like the stealth of the OB…big flat six with Prodrive gearbox, light (1300kg) which leaves a Boxster behind………

Looks to be F100 crossed with a FM……I like my F100 (bought over a F4 & F5 because I thought it handled better and was better size)…so I think I will be happy. Just depends on the price!

I’m with you Zach. I would just love a digital F3. Same size…every thing. If they really wanted they could add an MD4 as extra battery pack. I never understood how the MD4 looked so unergonomic, but felt soooo right.
No Nikon has felt the same….I still take mine out to play with! (I actually have a bunch of old Nikons, from the F,F2,F3 F100…..) the F3 wins.
Wish they’d put a digital back on/in the Nikonos V while they’re feeling retrocreative!

    Here’s hoping!

I haven’t been to El Pescador, but went to Turneffe Flats.
It was an OK trip, not mind blowing and the fishing was somewhat disappointing. The guides said it was because of the weather!
Bonefish were very spooky and few and far between on the flats. We were taken to the “honey hole” where there were plenty of 1.5-2ibs bones at about 6-10ft depth, but harldy what I would call “flats fishin”!
Permit were around in shoals of 20-50 which would divide up. There were usually in the same place daily and often there was a queue (line) of boats waiting to have a cast at the one shoal. A number were caught and it was towards the end of the week that (as I understand) one or two were caught on the flats rather than in shoals in deeper water.
It was mid April and the Tarpon had not arrived. So fish species was limited. We did catch a sea going croc though!!!

Turneffe is lovely, and run by lovely people. The guides are different. They give very little feedback and are not what I would call helpful. We actually fired one, which is a first for me. Some of them gave little or no advice to flies type, size etc…if any it was “use heavier”. We had been warned that they were “shy” which I can accept, but really you want more than just a “taxi” especially at the prices been charged and the expected tips. That is not too say they were all like that-we were a group and 2 out of the 5 guides were definatly more outgoing and helpful than the others. Some of our American cousins who evidentially go the Turneffe Flats on a regular basis have their regular guides and are very happy.

I’m not sure I’d go back. A pity because it is a beautiful spot.

    Mine too!!!!!!!

I have been seriously looking at the Fujifilm cameras recently having previously owned their Nikon bodied DSLR and loved the colours but not the slow buffers.

I want a compact rangefinder type and it would be great if Nikon would produce FF which used legacy lenses as I have a ton!

Probably too much to hope for but here’s wishing.

Very interesting what you say. I’ve passed it on to my wife who is an editor and writer. Particularly as many of the publications she works on/edits want online mags/presence.

Bizarrely my Nov/Dec FFSW copy turned up today which has pleased me no end. I really will miss it.

Bugger! Having spent ages over the years tracking copies down in the UK I finally subscribed 3 issues ago.
Great mag and I really liked the revamped look. Agree with you Zach that the Jeep cover was great!
I’m not convinced by the online mags like Hatch which I subscribe to. I much rather have tangible print in my hand.
    Sad news nevertheless.

Brett….Great photo! and some great information and thanks for the heads up on the flash.
I really hope this AW-1 works. I love the old Nikonos and really couldn’t believe that it was beyond the whit of man to make a dedicated interchangeable lens, digital UW camera. Ideally I would love an APS-C or FF sensor
I too looked at housings, but given the bulk, unwieldiness and cost discounted them. Particularly on my fishing trips, with the boys, you just want a straight forward camera anyone can snap a pic with if required, but also use to take money shots yourself.

Jaymor….D4…well I’m jealous!!! Just wish I could justify one!

I have used Nikwax for years. I can remember mad old Nick demonstrating it at trade shows in the 1980s…he washed his down sleeping bag in the down proof and then floated it on a pond to show it didn’t loose any loft!

I have used their products on all my sleeping bags as Goretex (or the like) does not work in 99% of conditions. The last thing you want when spending weeks in a tent, at altitude, is a damp pit.

One I am particularly interested in is supposed to strip the grease from down objects like comforters or down jackets, thereby causing the feathers to pop back up and restoring loft.

Wash with the Down Wash and then if you want it treated wash it again in the Down Proof.Afterwards, depending on the size of the garment (sleeping bags especially) remove it into a tumble dryer. Support all of it otherwise the weight will cause the internal baffles to rip and damage the internal compartments. Then tumble dry with a tennis ball (or the like) for a number of hours. The ball bounces around and fluffs it all up again. Takes a long time, but is worth it. (Sorry if I am teaching grandmother how to suck eggs!).

Yes human oils ruin down products, so needs to be done regularly if the item is heavily used.
    Down Wash does work!

    Hey guys –

Can anyone update me on the conditions on the White River as we head into fall? I’m going to be in-country for the A&M game (Go Hogs!) for work, and I thought I might steal a Monday thereafter. That’ll be late September, before things really get going though. I’m also planning to return in late Oct./early Nov. like I often do, but I thought I’d check and see what flows have been. Here in Georgia we’ve been nailed with rain, but I understand Arkansas has had a more normal year…

    Thanks!<br>

    Hey Zach
Is that the homecoming game? I need to make it back (and introduce my wife to the Razorbacks)…must get my ass in gear!

I’m off to Farqhuar next year

Have a great trip, and please post photos! That’s an absolute dream destination for me.

    Tim
Many thanks. I will do. I’m very excited about this trip and really can’t wait. Usually i don’t think about my “spring” trips until after Christmas/New Year…however since deciding on Farqhuar on the last night of our Belize trip (which was very disappointing) I’ve thought of little else!!!
    I will post photos!

It probably will be the UK.
We don’t eat “coarse fish”…chub, perch, bream, roach, dace, etc. Coarse species are catch and release, pike being an exception. The Eastern Europeans do eat them and this is causing problems at recreation lakes and fishing lakes. Many club lakes won’t allow Eastern Europeans as they do not observe “catch and release”.
    Hence the signs.

how about these. The G Lomis/Shimano is made in China, but the difference between this reels are very subtle. The knock off (or factory back door model) even has the same ridges on the spool! Just a couple of extra holes drilled in the frame fingers.

Thanks Zach. I look forward to it.

Your podcasts have been a life saver as I have been painting the house which is mind blowing boring (especially when I should be on the river!) and the podcasts, which I have re-listened to them all, have kept me sane.
So thanks so much for all the hard work.

It’s a good purchase for Orvis. SA is by far the stronger asset. It will be touch and go to see if they can keep Ross afloat; I hope so.

    Zach

Hopefully they can use Ross to manufacture their own reels which could have 2 beefits: keeping Ross busy and a viable concern; dealing with the oft raised issue of Orvis’ overseas manufacturing of reels, particularly the high end/cost ones.
