MemberGreat points so far.
… When its cold, be careful about bringing lenses and bodies into the warm inside of a house or car, you will be dead in the water for 2 hours waiting for everything to de-fog. I learned that the hard way a couple times.
Eric, to avoid this, simply place your gear into a gallon size ziplock or similar large seal-able plastic bag a few minutes from going inside. The condensation will always occur on the outermost surface (bag) and you gear will stay dry under plastic. Helpful in the tropics too (dry+cool air conditioned hotel room —> humid + warm outside air). In either case, let the temps equalize (usually only a half hour), remove camera and lens from bag, and yer’ good to go.

MemberCool shot Adam! Love that sky. Tripod and filter set? Nice!

MemberMatt, It really depends on how much telephoto action you do. For general landscape/fishing shots any AF will be better than your D70. Especially with the Tok. 11-16mm. However, start shooting waterfowl and/or sports then the D300 will shine with the right lens, settings, card, etc. (Brett Colvin or Tosh Brown might have more insight here…) 😎
The camera’s processing engine is something to consider and they get better with each generation. The D90, D300 (and beyond) color is standard and more consistent to each other which makes a big difference down the road when using multiple bodies. Hope this helps. db

MemberDon’t forget to reed what Ken Rockwell has to say about the difrences between a D300 and a D90….
Ken’s got an entertaining site. Just don’t take everything you read there as gospel…;~)
I’ve owned or own a D70, D80, a D200, a D300, and a D700. The biggest jump is from 6mp (D70) to 10-12mp (D200-D90/300). Once there it’s a matter of glass and technique. The D90 and the D300 share the same sensor (mostly), and the D300s adds video (yawn). So my advise is to snag a D200/300 and spend the extra cash on glass. Good glass!

MemberGreat report and shots Neal! Thanks for posting.

MemberThanks Lee! Means a lot. You guys giving ’em hell this weekend? Make sure you both post some emergency gloats…!
Douglas Barnes
MemberNice pics – I especially like the light/angle/ etc in #2 though I’m curious about the cast. That’s a huge open loop for a delivery . Is it the beginning of a snake/snap T/circle or ???. Spey stuff is so hard to image as the mechanics of the various casts have such distinct key elements, without keying in on them it’s difficult to show anything other than a guy with a double handed rod.
Will
Thanks Will. Not the delivery loop. Just a cool capture.

MemberTosh, I hear what you’re saying and I concur. No protocol broken. Rates aren’t what they used to be. Come to think of it, rates always never used to be what they always used to be. It’s how it’s always been and everyone [you should care about] knows it too. I just think you’re too good of an image maker to get caught up in these debates. Nuthin’ new here IMHO. Leave ’em to the ‘ol sour rut dwellers of a by-gone era and the newbies w/ entitlement issues. We just wanna see your new stuff! That’s all. 🙂
Douglas Barnes
MemberYes, I do try to get the best possible rate for each stock license–as should everyone else that promotes themselves as a photographer.
Yes, of course you try. We get that. So do I doood! Problem is, doesn’t always happen that way. Welcome to supply & demand meets intellectual property, yada, yada. Do you have a solution? Or is this going to be another one of those “back in the day…”/ rate-bitch threads? I get more than enough of that from the local photo blogs.

MemberA sign of the times? You shoot a lotta coin-in-bottle shots?
This is sad on too many levels, and I hope there’s not a bunch of good fly fishing images on that site. I didn’t have the stomach to sign in and look.
No log-in needed Tosh but I’ll still save you the trouble; A quick keyword search on iStockphoto’s site for “fishing” yielded over 20,000 results. That’s minus illustrations and video. Some pretty good ones too. Quick question: Have you demanded top dollar for every shot you’ve had published? Just asking. 🙂
I think one would be surprised at some of the established names in this corner of the outdoor industry who have, for what ever reason, put out free stuff in exchange for their shot’s landing in catalogs. The horror!

MemberThanks loads for your kind words guys!
Eric- Don’t mind at all. That particular loop shot was taken with a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Nikkor (just got this puppy; super sharp and mucho lighter & smaller than my 80-200 f/2.8, plus vr & more reach). I used two other lenses for this project: 24-70mm 2.8 G, and a lensbaby. I usually rotate these ‘tween the D700, D300, and infrared converted D80 that hang around my neck when the light is humming. When I’m feeling safe and away from danger I’ll get out my 14-24 f/2.8 for shots like this of the oak tree. Other times the 10.5mm fisheye rears it’s little head on the ride back. Nikkors all 🙂
Mike-I simply use my ir converted D80 and shoot in RGB raw. I’ll wb in ACR (16bit), then do a little channel mixing in Pshop to get back the blue sky. Tweek the hue for a pleasing blue and you’re good to go. Tons more on my Zenfolio page. Cheers, DB
