I am not all that impressed with how my flash pictures turn out with a canon system, so take this with a grain of salt.  If its inbright sunlight, i typically underexpose up to a stop or so, but its kind of a trial and error thing.  If its cloudy, i just let the camera do its thing.  The thing i would worry about more is make sure the fish is turned ever so slightly so that you don’t end up with a bad reflection off of the fish slime.  

Zach uses flash on almost all of his shots and they all look great, and you can’t tell there is flash being used, unlike my canon shots.  Zach, can you share some of your strategies and techniques on this?

I looked at your blog and best I can tell you use a Canon 30D. I have a 10D so I assume that the setup should be similar. When I use fill (not often enough) I shoot in either AV or TV mode. I set the flash (Sigma EF-500 DG Super) in ETTL mode, then dial-in negative flash compensation (1 to 2 stops) on the camera. Built in flash should work the same way.

I live in Indiana, which isn’t a hotbed of fly fishing, and I am pretty certain that they don’t allow any fishing in any Indiana properties. I assume that it might be due to some, even fly fishers, being careless with with trash, whether that be leader packages, etc. They do allow deer hunting on some preserves here, but I assume that is due to over population. Don’t misunderstand, I think they are great, I was just disappointed I couldn’t fish on

The Nature Conservancy is a fine organization and I have visited a few of their properties which were beautiful. My only disappointment is that on most, if not all, of their properties they do not allow fishing not even fly fishing.

I use and like pbase. 500MB for $23/year. I have had a problem linking photos I have posted at pbase into post here at Itinerant Anglers, but never anywhere else. Otherwise, I have been happy with pbase for over 2 years.

It really isn’t difficult or not that expensive, unless you register every picture you take. You can complete the form in 15-20 minutes, if you have never done one before, 5-10 if you have. The cost if $45. You can register copyrights for all the picture you can fit on a cd or dvd. I generally only register those pictures that I submit to publications. You can download the form for photographs at http://www.copyright.gov/register/visual.html

You can also use a customize brush in Photoshop. If you do a google search on “signature brush photoshop” you will find directions on how to create the brush. It is relatively easy so give it a try.

Same as film, cleaner image and slower shutter speeds. I have ISO 100 on my Canon and sometimes wish it went lower, but I also want clean images at ISO 800 and above when I need them (low light and fast shutter speeds), which I often do shooting wildlife.

Zach, I believe you have said that Nikon is worse than Canon regarding noise. Do you think increasing to 10MP on a chip that has noise is going to make it worse?

I have the same feelings about refurbished equipment that I do with used cars. I buy what I think is well made, reliable, and I keep it until it is unusable, therefore I want it factory new when I buy it. I know others will disagree.

If I take a photo as an employee, the picture belongs to my employer. So if I was working as an assistant for a photographer, and I took a picture of the photographer, credit would go to the photographer. I hope that makes sense.

Again, I enjoy PBS but I am against funding even good programs with tax dollars no matter the content. If the type of show they broadcast is worth having, they should be funded by those who watch them.

I like PBS, don’t care for NPR but think it is great that you all do. What I don’t like it taking tax dollars to fund any part of it. To me, that is not a function of government. It would be like the government funding “conversative talk radio”. IMO

I agree it is easy to point the blame flyfishertoo, but you have to admit that this president definitely lacks in environmentaly friendly policies. I don’t want to get into a big political debate. I would just like to see more being done to protect what we can’t replace.

The problem as I see it, is the same as the rest of politics and most policies, there seems to be no common sense middle ground. We either have to leave all land untouched, or we have to clear cut. That may not be a good analogy, but you get my point. Obviously we have to have fuels, to me,

I’d suggest going to Townsend and checking in at Little River Outfitters for the latest hatch info, buying the flies they suggest, then hitting Middle Prong by taking your first right just inside the park, then an almost immediate left up the road to the Tremont Institute.

I second Zach on LRO. Last year I visited Townsend on a family vacation and accidently (stupidily) left most of my gear in my garage (everything but my rod). I went into the shop to check on the prices of the gear I would need. Since my fishing time would be limited, I didn’t want to spend the money it would take to replace. I asked about renting, which they don’t offer) I explained what happened and they provided me with a reel (one they use for casting classes) and a line. I bought the rest of what I needed, flies, leaders, etc and went fishing. They help prevent what would have been a huge disappointment. I can’t say enough about how helpful they are.

Don’t get me wrong, I want to protect the rivers, mountains, etc, but it is easy to blame the Bush administration and the oil and gas companies, but as long as we drive our gas guzzling SUVs to go fishing, and then bitch when the price of gas hits $2.50/gallon, what do you expect.
