I have an 8 ft 8 in 4 wt g2. It is hands down my favorite rod for small dries and nymphs. Another strong point is the way it protects tippets-Scott got it right on this series of rods.

I have Several Scott rods, a G906-4, STS905-4,G2884-4,A3808-4,and a STS907-4. I also have several nice rods by T&T,Sage,TFO,and Diamondback. While they each are great rods to fish with, I always seem to grab my Scott rods when I head out. My G2 884 is most definitely my favorite dry fly rod for the South Holston Tailwater.

My fiberglass Hyde is now 12 years old. Apart from some chine repair, it is holding up wonderfully. My next Hyde will probably have a G4 shoe, but otherwise I wouldn’t change a thing. Fiberglass is light, weather resistant, and easily repaired if needed.

I like the Smith’s. Glass manufacturers seem to cycle between having really good products and having mediocre offerings. Over the years I’ve tried Oakleys, Costas, Orvis,Ray Ban,Smith, and they have all had good products that satisfied me. Right now, I have a pair of Smith glasses with plastic lenses that are great. I would like to try a pair with glass lenses though as I think they will definitely last longer and be more scratch resistant. If you know Mike Adams at Mahoneys in Johnson City, he can probably hook you up with several options to try.

I have a Scott G2 884. The only thing I can say bad about it is that all my other trout rods are collecting dust since I bought it. It is hands down the best rod I have cast for technical tailwaters. It straightens long leaders with ease and feels like a magic wand. I have a Ross Evolution 1.5 reel that balances awesome on it. If I were going to do a lot of nymphing, I might go with a 5 weight instead, but for my fishing, primarily small dries and midges with droppers, the rod is awesome.

I had my last Marlboro on New Years Eve, 1990. Since then, I have only had one cigar in Key West after my first fly rod tarpon. I got high as a kite on that one!

Quitting the habit remains one of my proudest accomplishments, not because it made me a better person, but because I was able to overcome one of my biggest bad habits. When I quit, Marlboros were $1.00 a pack and I used the money I saved each month for treating myself to a free steak dinner. Now, with smokes running close to $4.00, I suspect I could look at a new Scott Rod every 6 months with the money I saved.

Another wake up call was spending time at the cardiac ward with my father-in-law and watching the patients push their I.V.racks to a nearby exit to “light up”. It seemed like almost everyone in the ward was or had been a smoker. Two of my close friends who are physicians often tell me that if tobacco was outlawed, they would likely be out of a job-that’s how many ailments can be a direct result of the habit.

Good luck to everyone who quits-sure you’ll put on a few pounds, but it is definitely worth it!
