MemberI had my last Marlboro on New Years Eve, 1990. Since then, I have only had one cigar in Key West after my first fly rod tarpon. I got high as a kite on that one!
Quitting the habit remains one of my proudest accomplishments, not because it made me a better person, but because I was able to overcome one of my biggest bad habits. When I quit, Marlboros were $1.00 a pack and I used the money I saved each month for treating myself to a free steak dinner. Now, with smokes running close to $4.00, I suspect I could look at a new Scott Rod every 6 months with the money I saved.
Another wake up call was spending time at the cardiac ward with my father-in-law and watching the patients push their I.V.racks to a nearby exit to “light up”. It seemed like almost everyone in the ward was or had been a smoker. Two of my close friends who are physicians often tell me that if tobacco was outlawed, they would likely be out of a job-that’s how many ailments can be a direct result of the habit.
Good luck to everyone who quits-sure you’ll put on a few pounds, but it is definitely worth it!

MemberOne of these days I’ll meet you in person.
Good story about kicking your habit. I used to smoke Camels, then gave those up for Skoal because I was tired of always being out of breath. By 1999 I was spitting away two cans a day. I had been to see my Dr. for a routine checkup and he reminded me that I really needed to give up tobacco, especially for new new born daughter. I realized he was right and a week later I quit cold turkey and haven’t slipped yet.
Originally I was to be able to buy a new rod each year with the money saved, but that plan didn’t survive the millennium. Even so, I’m much better off, and much healthier.

Memberscary story, non fishing related:
my mom had one of her long time friends over last night for dinner, she is prob 60-62 and smoker periodically throughout life.
she had a tumor on her lung removed-said tumor result of smoking.
her body’s reaction to the tumor and surgery caused necrosis to her nerve endings from her left knee down.she has, nor will she ever have any feeling in her leg again. she has to walk with a cane. it was rather frightening.

MemberHi Guys
I was a smoker of 20 years until the other day, I’d given up before on NRT and will power but have always given in eventually to the habit. I have just finished reading Allen Carr’s “Easy way to quit smoking” and what a revelation it is. It is like a switch is flicked in your head and you are taken back to your persona before cigarette’s.Highly recommended.P.S I have no affliation with this book, all I know is it works.
Regards

MemberJoel,
I have no idea why fishing and tobacco are so linked.Dec 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm #32155
Joel ThompsonMemberWell it will be two weeks this coming Friday since I have had a chew. It has not been easy but even with the stress of the holidays I was able to make it through. Now that said I was not around anyone who was a chewer either so I have not been truly tested yet. With a little luck and a lot of wheel power I hope to keep this going.
Thanks for all the good advice everyone. It has been a very interesting topic to me.
