  • There are some great selections here, but my favorite is, James McMurtry: http://www.jamesmcmurtry.com
Who has been described by, Stephen King as “the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation.”
I always have a CD by him in my truck when I head to the river…

There was also a mention about it in the Salt Lake Tribune’s Outdoor Blog today.

Brian… It is making feel bad that I haven’t had a chance to load up my Holga yet with film and start experimenting.

    An unexpected and added bonus..

in reply to: Phil Monahan Podcast: A Great Chance for Feedback #69823

This is a small part of what I have been doing lately.
I have had a lot of great feedback on these and other images, on an artistic level but never an editorial one.

These are a part of a project I have been working on for almost two years now, and if you can, I’d love some feed back on.  You can see the rest of it on Flickr,
    On the Fly…

    Thanks,

OK, so let me get this straight…
There is a three image limit and we’re talking photographs we think would be great cover or table of content photographs.

I entered, and I challenge anyone here to do the same!

in reply to: Learning Photography #69452

My photographic education was more formal, my first classes were in junior high and high school and continued on through college.
    Which is worked for me.
I have also learned a lot by trial and error.
I think what really matters is figuring out what works best for you as far as learning goes.
Aside from the technical, there’s the aesthetic which can be the hardest to learn because you are really putting yourself out there with a project, so you have to have or develop a thick skin for constructive criticism.

If there are local photography groups in the DFW area you might consider looking there.  They have monthly competitions and critiques as well as lectures.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck!

I wished I had known you were coming to Utah, I live in Utah and have lots of time on my hands.
    Good luck!
I look forward to what you end up with.

The first one is the best, in my opinion.
I am not much for a lot of post processing, but in the case of the first photograph it works well.
    The crop works well too.

in reply to: Progression of tying Woolly Buggers. Very Funny! #40075

I am by no means an expert, but one suggestion.
Typically, tails on streamers like the wooly bugger are about the length of the shaft.
You can measure it up by placing the ends of the feather above the shaft of the hook and pinch it where you’ll put it on the hook.
    Make sense?
You are doing good!  The more you tie the better you’ll get.  I have been tying for about two years now.
I’ll second the recommendation on Charlie’s Fly Box, the tutorials are excellent, they are step by step and have

I am leaning that way too Dusty.

in reply to: Color Holga… #69284

Thanks for commenting Chad and David. I think you are right about doing this particular subject matter in black and white versus color.
I have some other things in mind that might lend themselves to color better, I guess it’s a good thing I have six Holgas!

The big thing I took away from that is no matter what you have, unless you are using it, what good is it.
Like he said, to be an artist, or an angler in this case, you have to be doing it.
So what good it is the potential for stuff, if it’s not being used.
So let’s get out there and use our stuff so we can be making art and catching fish!

Or if you want a brand spanking new one, get one from Urban Outfitters for $80 (seriously). You know, because all the hipsters only shoot Holgas…

I am too hip to buy anything from the likes of Urban Outfitters.. 😉 ;D ::)
But shooting Holgas isn’t about being hip…

    I love it.

The mood is brilliant – it feels good.

The reflections work well on the Holga and in B&W.

Thanks for commenting David, I can’t say

Brian…I’ve admired your images for some time now.  I think I am going to ask for a Holga for Christmas.  Anything I need to know?  Where to purchase?  Accessories?  Etc.?

    Thanks for commenting Cameron.
I have always enjoyed your blog, I am a fan on Face book too.
I’ll email you with some Holga info.
