Great Photo Essay! Thanks for sharing.barry evans
MemberMy name is Barry Evans.
I was born and raised in South Florida and the Keys.
I light tackle guided out of Key West for about 15 years back in the late 60’s and 70’s. Sold my business back in the early 80’s and moved to Alaska to work up on the Slope (my background training was electrical). I left AK and returned to S. Fl to work at a Nuclear Plant (Turkey Point) south of Miami. When that gig ended I boomed all over this country and offshore working as a contract Electrical Start-up Tech. I ended up settling here in North Texas (about 40 miles SW of FT Worth).
I retired 5 years ago, and spend most of my time building Custom Rods and fishing. So…between the fly-fishing, kayak paddling and photography, I didn’t have any time left to work!
I’m still single, so destination fishing is still an option, which I take advantage of every chance I get (mostly on the TX coast and the FL Keys).
I started fly fishing out of a Kayak 8 or 9 years ago, which I found almost addictive as the rod building and fly-fishing. Another one of my passions is Photography.barry evans
MemberI used to hunt a lot. I especially loved the bird hunting (because of the dogs working) and Spring Gobbler. I also hunted Deer, Elk, Moose and Hogs, but didn’t find it as enjoyable as the Bird hunting. I don’t get to hunt as often as I would like any more, but the fishing, kayaking, and photography fill the voids pretty well.

Good looking boat.
Looking at these photos of the Pirogues is “start’n to cast a craving on me”. (LOL)barry evans
MemberOn the new gear front: I was pretty pleased with this guy that I put together. Its an ultralight (>14oz) fly tying kit. The big find was the vise. The rest is all the materials I own – shoved into small bags. I could produce about 10 of any fly I could tie at home in just about every size that I need.
Andrew
Which Vise did you get?
Oh by the way, Great photos.barry evans

The first time I tried standing and poling, it felt a little shaky, but after a few minutes I got used to it.
I agree that a little more tumblehome would probably add to the stability, if one didn’t get carried away with it.
If I remember correctly, my buddy gave me $250.00 for the boat.barry evans
MemberHey Zach
Please put me down for a couple of Large shirts.

I don’t want to Hi-jack this thread because of some of the useful information in it. So……I’ll start a new thread on the Fly Fishing Discussion Forum that we can use.barry evans

Nope, I don’t have a Pirogue at this time, but I’ve owned a couple in the past. Great little boats, especially if you want to stand-up and pole. At this time my fleet consists of 6 Kayaks and one Canoe.
What plans did you build the boat off of?barry evans

I’ve been using a Pentax Optio for a few years now. It’s been dropped in both fresh and salt water, banged around in a Kayak and still works like it did when it was brand new. Plus it does well when taking macro shots. If and when it dies, I’ll sure replace it with a newer version of the Optio.
IMO, great knock around/fishing cameras.Chad
Good looking boat! “I jus loves dem Pearows”barry evans

I’ve got a new, never fished, custom built 9′, 2 piece, 10 wgt for sale. It’s built on a PacBay Traditions blank (USA made). It has a machined reel seat, 4-A cork full wells grip, 3 oversize stripping guides, the rest of the guides are single foot snakes. The guides are wrapped in black thread. All the components are of the best quality. The rod is a cannon!
The rod will cost you $160.00 shipped to your door. If you’re interested, let me know.barry evans

I know this is a little late, but I’ve had pretty good luck with Butterfly Photo. In most cases they have good prices and ship quickly. However, be prepared for the call back from a salesman trying to sell you accessories.barry evans
MemberMike
It looks like a Red Rat Snake/Corn Snake. It’s good to hear that there are some people that don’t kill every snake they see.barry evans

If you’re going to be in Key West and want some dock shots of Tarpon, head over to Key West Oceanside Marina (on the end of Stock Island) and check out the Fish cleaning table area. You’ll see Tarpon, Nurse Sharks and even a few Jew Fish (Goliath Grouper if you choose to be politically correct).barry evans

If you don’t want to wait on one of the new Kodiak’s, you might want to look at the Cannon CanoScan 4400F. I picked one up a couple of months ago and it seem to get the job done. It too has the ability to scan negs/slides. -
