I built a Pirogue from one of Uncle John’s kits. It too came out great. I had a buddy make me an offer that I couldn’t refuse…..so I sold it to him.
That little boat works out great on the TX flats for poling around looking for Redfish. I agree with you about needing a little more free-board. Sometimes crossing a deep water channel will really get one’s attention! However, increasing the free-board also increases the sail area (it gets pretty windy most days) so there’s a fine line that one has to consider before making any radical changes in the construction of the boat.
At this time, other than an Aluminum Canoe, all my boats are Plastic. Hopefully. that’ll change in the near future.Sorry Barry I was offline for awhile. I acctually orderd a new computer yesterday this one is a 2000 model and it’s a little to slow. Anywho, I am going to lower my seat a bit in the boat wich will inturn lower my CG and I will just have to get used to the way she moves. I think a person could probably put a small tumblehome on the sides and it would not increase the wind signature too much but give you a liitle more freeboard. So, are you saying that you stood up in yours and if you did how did it work out? I have not tried that one yet.
I hope you get to build another one or even some of the other designs out there are interesting. Bye the way what did you get for your hard work$$. If you don’t mind me asking!

The first time I tried standing and poling, it felt a little shaky, but after a few minutes I got used to it.
I agree that a little more tumblehome would probably add to the stability, if one didn’t get carried away with it.
If I remember correctly, my buddy gave me $250.00 for the boat.That was a great deal! I have a bit more than that in supplies alone. Not counting the hours spent building. It was not about the money anyway, I had a lot of fun building the boat.

Did you paint the sides or tint the epoxy? I also love you monkey’s fist up front. Did you tie it yourself? How do you like the way she paddles and handles? Di you put the grafite epoxy mix on the bottom? Sorry for all the questions. Have a great day!

The sides are painted.
I tied the monkey fist knot myself.
She handles great… I will add outriggers for fishing the marsh.
