The trees were good up there this time of year. We had some fantastic weather, the best they had in weeks. The “leaf peepers” were also out in full force- anywhere with a good view, you had a slew of folks taking pictures. That’s a pretty big deal up there. I suspect it will be peaking this week. I wish I could go back.
The Hemlocks up there and cedars seem to get old and just die. The place smells wonderful- earth matter decomposing and the smell of cedar and pines. The water in most of those ponds (we fished three different ones) is dark and looks like tea from the pine needles and peat in them. Next time we are taking the float tubes up and stying mountainside for a few days. I did see one mountianside that had alot of dead trees on it, I asked a local about it, they didn’t know if it was a parasite thing or something else.
We did also fish for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, and really gave it our best. I caught a small one and have a really lousy picture of it. The water was raging, I was wet wading and trying to handle my DSLR all at the same time trying to stay upright.
We saw alot of the devastation from Irene too. I didn’t want to take pictures of that stuff however. Pretty awful stuff to look at and you can search the videos online. 1800’s era coverd bridges that are basically woodpiles now. Gone. Some creeks are so scoured, they look like ditches full of granite gravel.
But they will recover. Vermont folks are tough and awfully nice.
I will probably be heading bakc in a month or so, then a few times through the winter. My brother and I are planning a hike up there for the summer. The Long Trail crosses the state in a 272 mile walk along the green mountains. There is some fishing along the way and it is a fantastic way to see this tiny state. I look forward to it.

I’d agree about the char… although, the yellowstone cutthroat in all its glory is a pretty damn fish. I’d be willing to host a trip trade- haha. You come here in the states and well catch all the brookies you want, and I’ll visit you and catch one of those monsters in your NZ waters.
…….as long as I dont have to buy a pair of purple tights though :)!

Sorry guys (and Zach) for causing so much grief here. History on other boards has shown this sort of thing follows Colin around, that’s all I’ll say. I’m done responding to his posts and/or PMs.
Perhaps I’ll clean up this post and put up some more pics from my trip, which was amazing, all new water to me, I got to hang with my brother whom I see maybe 2x per year.

Tippet to Fly: No slip loop knotSometimes I use a loop to loop from my bite tipper to leader.
Mike, if you dislike those faster sections, you’d hate my home water.
Just remember to always go straight into the rapids.
