MemberHome base is my brothers place in VT. I’m the old guy that gets up early, so I’ll throw down a mini mid trip report.
Yesterday we hiked up into a mountain lake that only has brookies in it. Fish were rising everywhere, and they were loads of fun. Fly pattern was not important- my brother threw black caddis, I through small yellow stimulators. We caught several brookies, and the action was non stop.
removed pictures to end the stupid little debate.

Oct 8, 2011 at 10:41 pm #50071anonymous

Colin M.MemberIt matters little either way, but those fins aren’t old, theyre concrete wrecked… dorsal shows classic “im a stocker sign” too

Peter E.MemberThat whole interlude was a bit childish.
Great picts, cool fish, and no worries about fish origins so long as they are there. And honest questions never hurt.
Just my $0.02

Colin M.MemberMan there is no need to get testy, i asked if they stocked the lake, the fish, both look really like stocked fish to me.

Colin M.MemberTim, If you dont have something worth adding, keep your chide comments to yourself.

Colin M.MemberLooking at the first fish again, I’d bet my entire mass of fishing and tying gear its stocked.

Colin M.MemberI felt like asking if a lake in VT which holds brookies was stocked, was a pretty straight forward, non-corrupting question no?
Oct 9, 2011 at 11:43 pm #50080
Colin M.MemberWhen you put yourself out there, you shouldn’t get so upset when people ask stuff Dave, personally i think the reactions of you and Tim are pretty childish.

InactiveIf you want to call me childish that’s fine. I dont mind. But don’t drag Dave into it since all he did was post a report. Dave didnt sling a single arrow…go ahead and check.
Its just interesting to me that most of your comments on this forum have you presenting your resume for some reason.
You mentioned that Erie Steelhead was, I believe you said “stupid easy”. Now your an authority on the authenticity of brook trout. But as you said yourself “youve seen TONS of fish.” Dave probably hasnt. 😉 So its helpful to get your perspective on his photo.
I bet there are guys on this board that were fishing for Erie steel when you were still in diapers and I also bet they wouldnt think the same.
We share the same home state so why would the mosquitos be worse “up here”?
You said we all should “call it like it is.”….just my observations from reading your posts for the last year or so.
Oh…and speaking of 12 gauges…maybe Dave could post a few pics of those sweet grouse guns he has.

MemberI felt like asking if a lake in VT which holds brookies was stocked, was a pretty straight forward, non-corrupting question no? When yall start launchin arrows, don’t expect me not to call it like it is.
Colin – the first arrow was launched by you. The picture was posted as a beautiful example from Dave’s fishing trip. Your question cast dispersions on the fish as most of us prize wild fish over stocked, right? The old “I was just asking a question” defense is a cowardice move by you. It’s an old lawyer trick, like being asked “How long have you been cheating on your wife?” That is an insulting question to be asked and forces the hand of receiver. You are wrong about the fish but feel free to retain the crown of stocked fish expert, its all you buddy.

Colin M.MemberI’m taking this post one more step and then i’m leaving it where it is.

MemberSorry guys (and Zach) for causing so much grief here. History on other boards has shown this sort of thing follows Colin around, that’s all I’ll say. I’m done responding to his posts and/or PMs.
Perhaps I’ll clean up this post and put up some more pics from my trip, which was amazing, all new water to me, I got to hang with my brother whom I see maybe 2x per year.

Steve K.MemberHey Dave….I went to your photostream to view the photos. Nice!
Are the hemlocks dying up there like they are here in the Smokies?
Oct 10, 2011 at 2:39 pm #50087anonymous
MemberSteve- Thanks man.
The trees were good up there this time of year. We had some fantastic weather, the best they had in weeks. The “leaf peepers” were also out in full force- anywhere with a good view, you had a slew of folks taking pictures. That’s a pretty big deal up there. I suspect it will be peaking this week. I wish I could go back.
The Hemlocks up there and cedars seem to get old and just die. The place smells wonderful- earth matter decomposing and the smell of cedar and pines. The water in most of those ponds (we fished three different ones) is dark and looks like tea from the pine needles and peat in them. Next time we are taking the float tubes up and stying mountainside for a few days. I did see one mountianside that had alot of dead trees on it, I asked a local about it, they didn’t know if it was a parasite thing or something else.
We did also fish for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, and really gave it our best. I caught a small one and have a really lousy picture of it. The water was raging, I was wet wading and trying to handle my DSLR all at the same time trying to stay upright.
We saw alot of the devastation from Irene too. I didn’t want to take pictures of that stuff however. Pretty awful stuff to look at and you can search the videos online. 1800’s era coverd bridges that are basically woodpiles now. Gone. Some creeks are so scoured, they look like ditches full of granite gravel.
But they will recover. Vermont folks are tough and awfully nice.
I will probably be heading bakc in a month or so, then a few times through the winter. My brother and I are planning a hike up there for the summer. The Long Trail crosses the state in a 272 mile walk along the green mountains. There is some fishing along the way and it is a fantastic way to see this tiny state. I look forward to it.
Jack,
I’d agree about the char… although, the yellowstone cutthroat in all its glory is a pretty damn fish. I’d be willing to host a trip trade- haha. You come here in the states and well catch all the brookies you want, and I’ll visit you and catch one of those monsters in your NZ waters.
…….as long as I dont have to buy a pair of purple tights though :)!
BTW….PM me if you need that AE-1 body.
Oct 10, 2011 at 8:20 pm #50088
John WilliamsMemberDave,
You are coming out way ahead on the trade with Jack even if you had to wear purple tights!!!!!!!
There certainly is something special about colored up Salmonoids and Char of any stripe or genetic history.
