I was introduced to Prosek one early morning while thumbing through the channels. I landed on ESPN 2 and watched “The Complete Angler”, I have only been more jealous once in my life, and that was watching my best friend kiss the first girl I had a crush on. My daughter takes her copy of A Good Day’s Fishing to school for show and tell, sometimes she likes to take Trout of the World too. Great writing even better art.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the darkroom, and I love to develop b+w film and manipulate and make my own b+w prints.
I have been rereading James Prosek lately. Am I his only fan aside from Nick Lyons? I see so few people mention him.
Though I am not a big fan of Knoxville itself (Do they still have the large pile of mulch that smells so good?) I would have to agree that the general area is the best.
Will – if you are not already doing so, try rechargeable batteries. I’ve heard the 2500mah AAs NiMH recycle a flash faster than normal throw away batteries. I’ve not done actual comparisons, but believe they do recycle faster.
My canon does 5fps and with a full charge, my 580 flash can almost keep up. Some of it, though, obviously depends on the flash.

Dave, the dissecting scopes are what you perhaps want. Considerations:
1) Zoom. I have a 7-45x (It’s an Omano, adequate for what I need. Sometimes you’ll find them called stereo microscopes.). Makes it nice for running a bunch of different sized bugs through for quick examination. Or for going from a general view to detailed view in a hurry. Helpful if you are trying to identify down to species level and going through a key.
2) Choice of direct vs. indirect lighting. Some have both. Direct lighting is probably the most useful.
3) Do you want or need a third optic port for a camera some day?
4) Do you really need one? Mine collects a lot of dust, but a necessary tool when I need it. Some of the student models are more affordable but don’t have the frills.
