Dave, the dissecting scopes are what you perhaps want. Considerations:
1) Zoom. I have a 7-45x (It’s an Omano, adequate for what I need. Sometimes you’ll find them called stereo microscopes.). Makes it nice for running a bunch of different sized bugs through for quick examination. Or for going from a general view to detailed view in a hurry. Helpful if you are trying to identify down to species level and going through a key.
2) Choice of direct vs. indirect lighting. Some have both. Direct lighting is probably the most useful.
3) Do you want or need a third optic port for a camera some day?
4) Do you really need one? Mine collects a lot of dust, but a necessary tool when I need it. Some of the student models are more affordable but don’t have the frills.
