MemberIt’s an awesome stream but it’s a mad house; combat fishing at its finest.

Member“The irony is, having drawn in all the fish, the millionaire has now posted signs saying “No Anchoring! Private Property!” in an effort to keep fishermen away.”
Can they do that in your state?

MemberHey Lee. I spent 7 days hiking in the great bear wilderness which is adjacent to Glacier. We spent a few days on the wilderness section of the middle fork. The wilderness fishing was vastly different than the fishing we did closer to our pick up point. The fly requirements in the wilderness were as follows: had to float. If it stopped floating it stopped catching. On one of my first casts I threw in a wt’d nymph under an overinflated orange baloon indicator. I thought something hit, but missed the strike. On my second cast a 10” cutt torpedoedo ut of the water after the baloon and popped it. I’ve never seen a large round orange bug…those cutt’s were forgiving, or perhaps starving. The next day my buddy caught over thirty fish on two flies of the same pattern (royal wulff with rubber legs).
Go to Mooses for some local brews if you are in Kalispell for the night. Don’t go out into the park without bear protection. You will probably need to buy spray when you are out there.
I really enjoyed the Middle fork, and you could easily get into what I refer to as the wilderness areas after about a three mile hike off the road system. You could do this on rt 2. I don’t really remember the location, but where the MF intersects route 2 and there is a parking lot. I think you could park there overnight and get into some really good fishing for those three days. Again this would be towards great bear, not glacier.
We also fished a lot of mountain lakes on our hike. Caddis patterns…particularly cripples like an x caddis. Not all have resident cutt populations. There are a lot more glamorous options out in that area that may be easier to access, but I’m not really well versed in those options
