MemberDon’t miss:
Polebridge- a throw-back Mercantile located on the Western boundary selling homemade goodies.Going-to-the-Sun Road- the highlight of every car-tourist’s visit here, this narrow road winds its way between cliffs across the park.
Grizzly bear hide & seek, especially around Kintla Lake, on the N.W. corner of the park.

MemberI just emailed my dad, his brother cooked in a local diner in the only stop in Glacier for about 30 years until he passed away. He, and his boss we’re fisherman. I will see what I can dig up for you.

MemberHey Lee. I spent 7 days hiking in the great bear wilderness which is adjacent to Glacier. We spent a few days on the wilderness section of the middle fork. The wilderness fishing was vastly different than the fishing we did closer to our pick up point. The fly requirements in the wilderness were as follows: had to float. If it stopped floating it stopped catching. On one of my first casts I threw in a wt’d nymph under an overinflated orange baloon indicator. I thought something hit, but missed the strike. On my second cast a 10” cutt torpedoedo ut of the water after the baloon and popped it. I’ve never seen a large round orange bug…those cutt’s were forgiving, or perhaps starving. The next day my buddy caught over thirty fish on two flies of the same pattern (royal wulff with rubber legs).
Go to Mooses for some local brews if you are in Kalispell for the night. Don’t go out into the park without bear protection. You will probably need to buy spray when you are out there.
I really enjoyed the Middle fork, and you could easily get into what I refer to as the wilderness areas after about a three mile hike off the road system. You could do this on rt 2. I don’t really remember the location, but where the MF intersects route 2 and there is a parking lot. I think you could park there overnight and get into some really good fishing for those three days. Again this would be towards great bear, not glacier.
We also fished a lot of mountain lakes on our hike. Caddis patterns…particularly cripples like an x caddis. Not all have resident cutt populations. There are a lot more glamorous options out in that area that may be easier to access, but I’m not really well versed in those options

Joel ThompsonMemberLee, when are you going? The water is still really big up there and the going to the sun road is not open yet and will likely not open until the first or second week of July. LOTS of snow to remove!
The water on the middle fork is high and cold as is the north fork. Depending on how soon you are going it could fish very well this year as a lot of hatches will be happening all at once!
I second Polebridge as a place to stop and Kintla lake is about as pretty as it gets. I wouldn’t worry about bear spray as long as you run faster than the rest of your group! 😉 Actually take bear spray. Lots of bears.
Who is your guide up there?

MemberLee:
I hope you post a fishing report upon your return. I’m taking my youngest daughter to Missoula 8/15 to attend the University of Montana. You might say I’m jealous. I’m staying over for a week to fish/explore. Any tips you can give me would be great.
