We saw that while sitting at a bar in Oil City, PA after fishing all day. We also commented on that.

Mike- i love steelheading. My family lives an hour from the Rocky, and about a half hour from the Vermilion. While i’m here in Canton i’ve got some rivers i’m going to check for carp this summer. Ever fished carp on the fly? It’s a ton of fun. We’ll meet up

I made a box out of tulip poplar. I used a hole saw to rough in the shape of the insides. Next box i build I will use a router. With the hole saw there was too much trimming involved that I think could be avoided with a router. cut slots for your hinges, and find a good latch. Try Rockler’s for all your hardware. they have some really cool hidden hinges i’m going to get for the next one.

As for the foam, I first stained the whole thing like Allan mentioned. I did one coat on the insides and about 3 on the outside. I bought from Pat Cataan’s (a craft store), or Michaels, some craft foam. I use it on some fly patterns. It’s about 59 cents a sheet. Get some cheap superglue and glue the foam in. you won’t get that fancy ripple type at the craft store, but you could get a sheet from Cabelas for cheap, or anywhere really that sells replacement foam.

I use Garmin Topo US 2008  While the link you provide is useful
I found it doesn’t compare to Topo 2008 in detail or usefulness.

same ingredients as Zach basically, but i’ll add some lime juice, vinegar, and cumin to taste. I’ll put a bit of chili powder in for good measure too.

try making green salsa (tomatillo) salsa. Substitute tomatoes for tomatillos. they’re super easy to grow and you get a million of them on one plant. split them in half when ripe and broil them in the oven til brown. add your other ingredients and a can of chicken stock to the mix. amazing stuff.

ever grown/tasted “fooled you” jalapenos? tastes just like a jalapeno but little to no heat.

Eric, yes I am familiar with Mercer. I have drag raced at the old Sunset drag strip there, and when I was in high school we ran a few cross country meets at Mercer. I went to Slippery Rock H.S. but i grew up in mount chestnut (outside of Butler). Nice little stream!

Thanks Bill. I had never gotten to fish it until just this weekend either. As Dave mentioned, it is indeed one of the nicest streams I’ve been to!

Dave, no problem. Did you get out for steelhead? We’ll get together soon

I pack instant rice, like the chicken flavored kind, etc. I also pack the instant gravy packets (cheapest the better!), and instant mashed potatoes. Take along some chicken packets and/or tuna, throw that in with your rice, add a little water in your camp pot and bam, instant deliciousness! Don’t forget the crawdads either…

Yuengling! One of my favorites. Wish we could get it in OH. One of the many things i miss about living in PA.

Beautiful brookies and shots, Zach. Killer stuff.

Lost: a few camera phones and a mini maglite. i always forget to snap my pockets shut before i lean over…

Also lost a few nets. The latest was on Spring Creek in PA. Lucky for me i never spend over 20 bucks for a net!

Found: red handled hemostats, which i in turn lost somewhere. go figure. Also I find lots and lots of old crankbaits and miles upon miles of monofilament, split shot, bobbers, and eagle claw hooks.

i also fell into an icy cold creek in early april, over my head, trying to get my nymphs free from a submerged log. I lost my balance and tried to jump 10 feet to the next submerged log only to fall about 6 feet short. I lost my rod/reel in the process. it was like watching the titanic sink in slow motion. After stripping down to my underbritches I again walked across the first log and was able to see my strik indicator. i lifted it with my toes. it felt heavy (good sign!). After some coaxing i retreived the rod and reel. and, it’s all on video…

Nice! What water were you on? If you feel like a little day trip from Cleve. head down to Mohican forest. Carp-a-plenty, and even some smallies. The scenery is nice too.

    Nice fish!

Thanks guys. went out last night, struck out big time. Not even a hit. I did manage to get the crap scared out of me by, possibly, a beaver. Or, a huge carp hiding in 6 inches of water. I don’t normally scare easily but that made me a little jumpy.

Maybe i’m not waiting long enough. I usually pack it in by 11. Maybe i should start at 11?

Depending on how much stuff you plan on packing with you at a time, for 12 bucks there’s this : http://cgi.ebay.com/Allen-Compact-CHEST-PACK-10221-Fly-Trout-Fishing-/380252597618?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5888d22d72

i bought one about 2 years ago. I can fit 2 small boxes, or one large box in the main body. In the front pocket i fit tippet and maybe some floatant, etc. In the front small zip pocket i put indicators. There’s a zip pocket on the very back too where i could put my license, leaders, and/or trash i’d pick up (mostly fishing line tangles). I attached clippers and stuff on the neck strap.

I always put the neck strap over my shoulder. More comfortable and keeps it out of the way. the neck strap is detachable so if you didn’t want it, you could take it off.

It’s not very large by any means, but for the money and for what i used it for, it worked nicely.  Good luck!

Thanks guys. I’m with you on the staking down the boat. i dropped anchor last time i was out there. These guys are just so hard to see with all the mud, even in shallow water. It seems like an uncanny amount of mud for one lake. Nonetheless, theones i see still seem just out of reach. My casting feels pretty good. I don’t seem to spook them.

Maybe i’ll try a bit longer leader. I’ve been using roughly 12′. a 9′ with 2 to 3 feet of tippet. Not flouro though. Would that make a big difference? The water’s so turbid they wouldn’t see it anyhow, or so I’d think. Or, is that just for extra ‘weight’.

Thanks for the tips, again. Unfortunately i just moved from SE ohio to north central ohio so this lake and the carp got the best of me. I will return, and I will get them! This is good info. for any other lake/carp though too. I appreciate it

Dave- i have been fighting the urge to over cast! There’s quite a few in this spot, so picking one is definitely necessary. I have a neat cray pattern i concocted a few months ago, i’ll send it your way.

Gary- you hit it right on the head. Thanks. I was thinking the same thing about them sucking up mouthfuls of mud in the hopes of finding something. That area is constantly muddy and i would imagine that seeing food floating by rarely happens to them. My flies aren’t heavily weighted. Depending on the type i may (if at all) wrap just a few twists of .030 lead. I found that if it floats too slowly the fish move right past it and don’t see it in time. Again, too heavy and a far cast can spook them with too much weight.

Regarding the mud plumes, my thoughts again too. I try to figure their direction and cast. I usually wait until i can see them out of the plumes before casting, but so much mud it’s hard. Seems like even when i cast in front of them from far, they don’t care. I’ve fished the shallower sections too. I’d prefer that, since it’s easier to see them, and the fly. They usually see me coming before i can even cast. Then again, that was with the boat. Sneaky bastards they are.

I’m a big fan of getting close if i can. At the Clear Fork branch of the Mohican, the carp are in there thick. You have to get close, and i generally cast from the bank. I’ve had a lot of luck that way. This being a wide open space is a bit hard to get to them, wading is a pain with all that mud, i sink up to my knees. Warmer weather means i can put on shorts in favor of the waders.

Thanks Tim. Again, I’m not ruling out the possiblity of spawning by any means. Just seems that with everything else being so early here, compared to years past, it seems like they’ve spawned and moved on. But it would certainly explain the difficulty in hooking them!

No hexes down here in this particular lake. I have used hex patterns on a whim in a river and had really good results, though no hexes are in that stream.

For gear i’ve been using my albright GP 5wt, DT line with 9′ leader with a couple feet of tippet. Tried a WF for a little further distance but it spooks them when it hits the water it seems, and short casting is difficult with WF. I usually weight my flies, but not so heavy they make a loud crash into the water.

the 4′ water is basically just the channel where the stream enters the lake, the surrounding area is about 3′. Then about 2 ‘ to where the weeds and algae are present. I’ll get it figured out sooner or later. Probably later, as I’m moving in the next few days back up to north central Ohio. Then I’ll have a whole other mess of lakes to explore

Thank you all for the links. Roughfisher has some interesting patterns i’ll tie up tp try.

I’m not 100% certain of the reproductive ecology of carp, but it seems that the spawn should be over here in Ohio. I noticed spawning activity roughly a month to two months ago. I did somehow manage to hook up 1 during the spawn. I was surprised.

These guys are relatively solitary when they’re cruising along puffing silt. There may be a couple at a time, but doesn’t appear to be a spawning group. I did notice a couple this afternoon slurping the surface, but
