That’s hilarious, Justin. I just checked and there’s definitely nothing wrong with the file or server on my end.

    Gary –

Interesting to learn that pH drops when rain events occur. I wonder if that’s part of the trigger that causes rainbows to run upriver to spawn. I know they can “taste” particular sections of water or even tiny feeder streams–I’ve watched that happen.

Snaevarr have you checked the PH of your stream by any chance? I wonder if you have an acidity issue.

I believe there was plenty of reasonable doubt and that he would have been acquitted had his trial attorney been competent. I’m a trial lawyer myself, and based on the clips I heard, she was really, really annoying, and that jury probably hated her. That is textbook ineffectiveness. I’ve also seen a lot of older attorneys struggle with issues of technology, like explaining the cell tower situation, when they really don’t have a fundamental understanding themselves. As trial counsel your primary job is to teach and explain.

As to his actual guilt, I agree with Koenig’s assistant: there would have to have been way too many coincidences breaking against him that day for any reasonable person to think he wasn’t involved. Now as to what actually happened, I have a lot of questions. Jay’s lying, Adnan’s also lying, something was going down.

My theory is that Hae realized her ex-boyfriend was actually running drugs with or for Jay, not just buying weed from him, and may have threatened to rat them out, and possibly not just those two guys. Adnan might have killed her or Jay might have or one of their dealer contacts might have, but whoever did it or was involved can likely still get to Adnan in jail. His only incentive to play this game with Koenig and let her dig into his story is if he was involved in a murder, but *differently involved,* and he may be hoping that Koenig will uncover the real story so he can actually tell what happened without being shanked.

The cops dropped the ball with Jay, and badly. He should not have been given a plea deal, and they should have put a tail on him and apped his cell phone to see what all this other criminal activity he alluded to was. He admitted to burying a body and he walks?

#1 rule for rowing a driftboat: point your nose at trouble and back water.

Justin in my experience with midges the trout actually do key on color, and the only way to know is to catch some. An easy way to do that is to go to Home Depot and buy a small section of window replacement screen and a pair of thin dowel rods. Staple the screen securely to the dowels, leaving a few inches exposed on the ends for handles. This will make a nice little seine net and let you capture the naturals for inspection. I typically carried black, tan, and gray options. It does make a difference in hookup rates. Roll your seine net up like a scroll from both ends and use a rubber band to keep it closed until you need it. It only needs to be 12″ square or so for midges, but it’s also fun to make a bigger one the size of an actual window and use it as a kick net. You set up downstream of a riffle and have a buddy do the San Juan Shuffle just upstream of you. You’ll be amazed at all the creepy crawlies you catch.

And the moral of that story is NEVER DRINK RIVER WATER hahahaha.

I need to look into one of those Travis. My parking garage here at the new job doesn’t have the roof clearance for me to get my canoe in. I could also take that down to Mexico…

Justin you probably need to resize those images before uploading them here. A good option would be to upload them to IMGUR, which has unlimited server space and resizes automatically, then edit your posts to link to the IMGUR .jpg file. That will host them here.

I have never fished the public access of the Soque but I will give you this piece of advice: go when it is raining and try to find creek mouths and points of convergence to fish. Those big pellet fed pigs in the private water have the same instincts as every other trout even if they have spent their lives on the couch eating M&Ms, and if they feel a pulse of water (a “freshet”), they’ll move upstream to try to spawn.

    Hey Justin –

Not a lot of midge activity these days for me, but when I fished the Little Red River in Arkansas I was pretty dedicated to it for a while.

My best results came from AK Best’s baggie midge in sizes from #20 down to #26. The smallest ones are hard to find because the feathers themselves are difficult to come by.

Generally speaking I would locate a pod of rising trout (not hard in the JFK Park area of the Little Red), wade cautiously to within 30 feet or so, and lay out a cast using 7X tippet on at least 12 feet of leader. Not easy to land one but this is kind of a specialized deal, and I never really targeted big fish.

Couple tips; be sure to false cast for drying purposes away from the rising trout. They feel the spray coming off the line if you cast over them even if you stay short. Second, grease your leader, not just the fly. I like the Japanese Tiemco Dry Magic Super Powder Fly Floatant, which sounds like a sushi recipe but is really, really good stuff. One tube has lasted me for years. Finally, you’re not going to see the take in all likelihood, so set *gently* on every rise that you see.

Good luck and thanks for the post!

    Hey Wayne –

I haven’t done a podcast yet with Bote Board (by the way they pronounce their company “Boat Board” not “Bot-uh Board” like most people assume). However I am working on a piece which will run sometime next year in Fly Rod & Reel, and among other things we’re going to demo those inflatables and compare them in performance terms to hard plastic and fiberglass boards. No one has really done a comprehensive writeup on SUPs for a fly fishing audience yet, and we of course have special needs. It’s a big project and I need warmer weather to actually check out the boards.

John, Scott has always had some unusual rods available only to its overseas distributors. I believe–but I don’t have direct knowledge of this–that some of those distributors may help Scott foot the bill for specialty rod designs which otherwise could not be profitable because they are so specific to a given region. For example I know Scott made an 8 weight G2 spey rod (I think it was 13′) for the Japanese market. I have real live friends at Scott and did everything I could to get ahold of one, but was told the only way they were contractually able to sell it to me was to literally re-import it from Japan at a total cost of around $2,200!

Personally, I kind of like this. It is nice to to have some white whales out there, after all. If I ever see that G2 come up on eBay, I’ll hop on it.
