Relatively new to Spey I attended a clave last summer. Most of the manufacturer’s (Sage, Beulah, Scott, etc.) were showing off their latest and greatest. Being a Scott fan I test casted a few T3Hs and later purchased one in the fall. Several experienced spey caster’s were asking the Scott rep about the “Radian Spey Rod” which the rep admitted he wasn’t allowed to show in public in the US. Apparently it’s only available in the European market.

Why would a major fly rod manufacturer not make a rod available to the US market? The spey market is booming, the single handed Radian has been very well recieved, I have to assume this rod could potentially sell exceptionally well in the US.

Perhaps the Radian DH is coming soon to the US?

John, Scott has always had some unusual rods available only to its overseas distributors. I believe–but I don’t have direct knowledge of this–that some of those distributors may help Scott foot the bill for specialty rod designs which otherwise could not be profitable because they are so specific to a given region. For example I know Scott made an 8 weight G2 spey rod (I think it was 13′) for the Japanese market. I have real live friends at Scott and did everything I could to get ahold of one, but was told the only way they were contractually able to sell it to me was to literally re-import it from Japan at a total cost of around $2,200!

Personally, I kind of like this. It is nice to to have some white whales out there, after all. If I ever see that G2 come up on eBay, I’ll hop on it.
