Adobe Lightroom Beta is currently free, runs on Windows and Mac, and has a very sexy slide-show program built in that can actually output an entire webpage complete with flash menus to navigate.

Part of what I am doing by asking you guys these questions is determining what further questions I need to ask.
My typical workflow includes adjusting Levels (with which I’ve been getting better results than pure saturation increases), Contrast, Color Balance, Selective Color, Saturation, Unsharp Mask, in that order.
These are all extremely helpful comments — more than you guys probably realize — and I want to thank you all very much.

Just to add to what Buzz is saying about highlights being blown:
Film was extremely good at having a “long shoulder,” or a slow curve down to the absolute white or absolute black that results from an image being either completely exposed or completely unexposed.
My understanding is that some RAW converters are unable to read the information that the camera attaches to the file for processing, like your Saturation +2 information.

The only difference would be in the actual compression algorithm the image undergoes when you view it as a jpeg versus as a RAW image, but here’s the thing: RAW images themselves aren’t *viewable.*
Nikon was a bit behind the curve on noise, I believe, but I also think their newest outings are supposed to be superior.

The next lens we buy will most likely be the 12-24mm DX; that is a functional walkaround lens for most of the work I do (I just wish it could go macro).

They make a chemical warmer that is real weird – it’s a plastic baggie full of gel that you warm in warm water or microwave or something to “set” it, then when you want heat you just click this little magnesium disc inside the gel back and forth and it makes some kind of chemical reaction begin – the heat pack becomes a crystalline solid and gives off heat.
