I actually did and still do a little bit of old reel collecting. I suspected that the reel was worth about $100, Rolf, which was why I grabbed it. This particular 1492 is a really early one, too; first run pre-1935 in all probability.
I’ve actually revitalized some old silk line and sold it for profit before. Ironically, Lauren is wearing a necklace out tonight that I made her out of old silk line (she picked the bangle thing).
I’m not a right hand wind guy but I can make it work. Ideally I’d like to get ahold of a pre-WWII lead-coated Hardy Perfect in LHW and 3″, but I don’t have $1500 laying around and those have always been pretty rare. The new $900 ones are really really nice; if they go out and get them machined in the Far East (which halves the price) I might have to spring for one.
Oh and I checked the seat last night; it fits fine.
There’s no right answer; these kinds of threads are basically just invitations for people to list their preferences.

It’s just a terrible time of year to be beach fishing, and if you want to be in the fish this time of year, you’re pretty much limited to the marsh or the deep.
I agree wholeheartedly with the Clouser recommendation. I also agree that technically speaking the rods are probably classed a size heavy for what they can handle.
I have a 7 and an 8 weight TiCr. My 8 is built with Sage hardware and is very nice looking (would have been nicer if the damn cat hadn’t knocked it off the epoxy drier and forced me to re-do the last coat).
These are stiff rods. They really don’t hit their sweet spots until you get out into the 60-80′ cast range, or use overlined shooting heads. For in-close work, I would typically prefer my Scott Heliply, which is very flexible for a saltwater rod. But for sheer distance casting and driving tacks into the wind, I agree the TiCr + Rio Clouser is an excellent combination.
Oh and re: Sharkskin–great product but be careful.
I deleted a post linking to this article yesterday and now I will explain why, since this story has clearly grown.
I have friends at ESPN Outdoors. The writer in question, Robert Montgomery, is a BASS employee who has been given a column at ESPN. I am not at liberty to quote my friends or explain much further, but suffice it to say that Mr. Montgomery’s reporting has been seriously called into question based on this article. My impression is that ESPN’s upper management is embarrassed by this piece (but that is not my friends’ statement).
It appears to me that Mr. Montgomery, who typically is responsible for things like reporting the size of fish caught, got a little out in front of himself and turned what was meant to be a factual piece into an op-ed.
Thus, this piece should be read as an op-ed.
Because it is an op-ed piece, and because it is blatantly political, I am going to lock this thread. I would just ask you to draw your own conclusions based on the sourcing, and use the internet to seek additional information about this topic before becoming ‘concerned.’

Further, ESPNOutdoors.com has issued an apology for the article, while leaving it up:
“[W]hile our series overall has examined several sides of this topic, this particular column was not properly balanced and failed to represent contrary points of view.”
