I really like the otter soft eggs. I tie in a small clump of white craft fur at the hook bend then slide the egg over the eye and it won’t sling off. In fact all you have to do is tie up a bunch of hooks with the fur and keep some eggs with you. You will lose some eggs but all you have to do cut your tippet, slide a new egg on the hook and retie. A new knot is probably a good idea every so often anyway…
Of course I only use this method to fish to the fish behind the Redds.

in reply to: what waders? #16780

I’ll preface this by saying I’m brutal on waders and probably on the rest of my gear. Went the  stay cheap and replace route. Hodgeman’s $80.00 waders – I got  3 months/5 months and close to one season= 9 months  out of three pairs respectively.

Switched to another brand a little higher up the food chain price wise and  after two seasons and a couple of  “not unexpected” repairs I,m dry and happy . In season from mid May to late November I fish 3 or 4 times a week. Cabelas Gold Medal works for me so far:)))  Nicely taped/reinforced ass and legs/ bit weak on the suspender clips/decent fit on my middle aged body/for the price  I,m ahead already  on my last choice/if you  dont  like wearing Cabelas brand take off the label:)))) They are in great condition and I expect a couple of more seasons out of them based on whatt I’ve seen so far.

In cold weather  I use a set of Neoprene “leggings” ie- old neo,s cut at the crotch and with the feet  cut off , under my breathables and have been plenty warm and comfortable .

    Will

I’m 99.9% sure that Hodgeman makes Cabelas Waders. If you don’t like Cabelas brand buy the higher end Hodgemans. My guidelights have taken lots of abuse for several years. I wet wade in the summer though.

I don’t understand how LL can offer such a replacement but it sounds good to me. I’d consider them next time I buy.

I haven’t treated my $150 Hodgeman waders with anything but disrespect in the four, almost five years I’ve owned them. I’m not sure of the benefit of Revivex on a garment that’s meant to be submerged, it works ok on my wading jacket though. But in answer to your question I don’t know if it’s as good or not.

Zach are going to be in Putnam county? Dude the farm pond fishing around middle Georgia is some of the best LM bass fishing in the south. Finding one to fish usually requires hooking up with a local. There’s also lake Sinclair for Hybrid and I think Striper are in there now. I’ve got family running a marina on Sinclair so holler if your close by.

I say start em out however you want, just do it in a fun and exciting way. If he’s a fisherman you won’t have to force feed it to him, it’ll come naturally.

It’s all good guys. I respect the opinion of all who posted here and I agree with most everything that was posted. I just didn’t want it turn into another bashing for improper handling like I’ve seen on other boards.

in reply to: Warning snake pics. #16702

Barry I rarely kill anything unless I intend to eat it and maybe the random spider … I’ve been catching snakes all my life and I thought this would be a good opportunity to teach the girls how to tell when a snake isn’t poison. You know the round pupils and split scales behind the rectum. Of course you gota catch it in most cases to see these things. It took a little coaxing to get my youngest to hold it but she warmed up to it eventually. A few years age we caught a green tree snake and she was fine with it. I guess this one looked a little more menacing.

Here in TN they stick 8/0 hooks in their mouth and out their nostril then drag them behind planer boards all day in search of Striper. When the day is done and one has been smacked by giant Striper a few times, they take em home and put em in a tank to heal for the next weekend. Now before you get all up in arms 1, its legal in TN and 2, they sell Trout just for this purpose here.

The whole idea that trout are delicate little fish that shouldn’t even leave the water when un hooking them is horse poky. I’m not advocating the torture of Trout, I’m just saying they are tougher then you think.

That is a nice fish BTW and yea I dig the beard too.

It gets harder and harder for me to buy seafood without feeling guilty. Tuna, Snapper, Grouper, Shrimp, and Oysters, are my weakness. There are many fish I won’t buy though.

    Shoulda been with me today.

in reply to: Pelican case question. #61223

Ahh man that’s a nice setup. Tipping is something I hadn’t considered good point! I wonder if a SS 357 mag would be enough ballast? 😕

in reply to: Pelican case question. #61220

    Matt
Any reason you’re looking at the toploader style rather than the more conventionally shaped Pelican cases?

Smaller foot print in the ready to open position and should I have it open and there’s water in the floor it’ll be better protected with the top loader.

    Ian
This is mainly for boating and sometimes it gets rough, so yea I’m thinking the hard case is better protection.

Steve the numbers are three times what they were Sat. Striper won’t be far behind and I’m talking big female Striper to 60 pounds. Besides the Trout were much more fun Sat then them darned ole trash fish…

in reply to: Podcast Q & A with Bill Butts #16494

I listened to the podcast today and really enjoyed it, excellent information in there for sure. About the fish Zach caught in the photos. I wish I knew the details but there is something about crossing male Striper and Hybrid sperm or something like that that creates these fish. A few people think they are just Striper with broken lines but I don’t believe this at all. The size and attitude of these fish is not Striper like and the broken lines just confirm IMO that they aren’t pure Striper. Here’s a pic a friend of mine took of one. You can clearly see that if it was a Hybrid it would have been the world record. I think the fish weighed around 30 pounds. Ask anyone who has spent a few yers chasing these fish what that fish is and you’ll get the same answer everytime, Hybrid. Those lines are way to broken for a Striper at least any normal Striper.

He called TWRA and they told him a story about a mix up at he hatchery and some egg vats weren’t cleaned or something to that effect and therefore this fish didn’t qualify as a record contender. They call it and X Striper or something like that…

Anyway, Bill give me shout if you ever head to TN. We have world class Hybrid and Striper water all around us here in Nashville.

in reply to: Bill Butts Podcast – White Bass and Striper! #16319

Hey guys were smoking the Stripe right now and the Striper are starting to show up. BD reported seeing one in the submarine class yesterday, 50 pounds of pure hell fire. Water was too low (no generation) and it was very bright so we didn’t pursue the Stripers but we did catch Stripe til we were sick of it. Now’s the time if you wanna a shot. They should be starting to stack up in the usual places around here.

in reply to: Rod and Reel Suggestions #16213

Another Ross Evo/Lamson LS owner here. I hate to admit it but I like the Lamson better and I got both my LS2’s new from STP for $99 where my EVO’s were around 300.
IMO the Ross Evo looks awesome until you put line on it. I also used to think the Lamson looked fruity but once you handle one a bit it just kinda grows on you. Both are great reels.

in reply to: Orvis Reels? #16233

For the money Orvis is hard to beat. I used to buy a lot of their Bar Stock Reels. The CFO and the Bar Stock and several others are good reels and they had a very loyal following until…. Once they moved from England to China or wherever they moved to I quit buying. They, like several other companies had a great product with a great following but they let greed get between them and the customers. It cost them my business.

I really like the add with that bamboo rod they sell for a few thousand dollars matched with an Asian made CFO on it….. Why not just put a Zebco 202 on it.

Very nice Scott. This one I really liked.

in reply to: Discovery Channel – Planet Earth #16145

I’ve had it scheduled on my DVR since it was first advertised, I can’t wait. Blue planet was a very good series and I agree it may be the best ever put on film. I’m glad to see Discovery coming back,, if there was only hope for TLC. I don’t understand why they don’t change the name of TLC to a more fitting name. The Gender Confused Learning Channel maybe.

Did you catch the show about the Tuna Cowboys Zach? That one was pretty good too. These high paid scuba divers (cowboys) go into huge nets full of 50 to 300 pound Tuna and wrangle sharks out of the nets.
