MemberCarter I just pulled that link up for a pic so I don’t know anything about that company. Here try this one they have the dims. It’s bigger then it looks. I’ll photo the lid and O-ring so you can see what sold me.

MemberBryan about the only grief I’ve ever had about salty stuff is that its to far from home. That could change however. The pollen in the Mucus City is hard on my entire family and the cold is hard on my wifes joints and mine too. She has Degenerative disk disorder and has had two operations so far and I’ve just been hard on mine. I could almost justify a move based on those two factors alone. 🙂

MemberZach, I caught every fish I went after, most of them on the fly including a small Snook. I’d love to go back when the weather is favorable and get those Bonito on the fly. They’re just mini Tuna and pull like a freight train. Fly fishing in the blue water no doubt would have been a blast but the addiction to Tarpon on a fly just might be my undoing..
Dude, you have got to go try this somewhere!!!! If I was a young man with a law degree God himself couldn’t keep from living in South Fl.

MemberGreat rods indeed!
I’d love to see them try some kind of formed foam or non cork grip and high end ceramic ringed guides. They would OWN a niche market.

MemberCarter, no family on this trip!!!

MemberCool I just acquired a Sage equator line for my 9wt and its pretty darn sweet. It makes that Xi a casting machine. I’d been casting a cheap Bass Pro saltwater line and it performed like poopy on that rod. Glad to see it wasn’t the rod. Thanks again. Bob I don’t know about saltwater but around here all I fish is sink tips unless I’m trout fishing with a dry or nymph an indicator. Do you just not like casting them?

MemberBob Thanks a bunch for the input! You cleared up alot with this post. I’m going to post it over on my site so I can save it for future use.
One more thing what line do use most often? I’ll be bringing a wide range of sink tips and rods from 7 to 10 wt. My floating and intermediate lines are few. If you were gonna be sure to have one backup line what would it be?

MemberYea Zach I think leadcore was prob the first shooting head ever made. This is an old timers way but hey it works.
The leadcore line has a braided sleave like the stuff you use, that covers the wire. I just remove the wire from each end and whip finish a loop in the braided stuff. It is 37 pound strength. The small dia mono running lines scare me. Does Amnesia coil badly?

MemberI’ve been buying the integrated lines for years now. I was getting them for $20 to $30 but those deals have sort of dried up. I might never have to buy another if this works as good. The loop to loop slides thru without any problem at all. It slides thru so well that I think I’ll start whip finishing loops on all my lines now.
I haven’t broken a rod yet and I throw 600 grain at times. And yea, I don’t think my rotator cup is gonna make it till I retire.Bryan if you are in the boro stop by Murfreesboro Outdoors and it’s in a bin in the far left of the store with some other old fly tying material. He has several spools left that were $25 but are marked down to $9.

MemberI experiment with my retrieve alot. If you get follows but no takers go with a faster more erratic retrieve like a jerky strip,,strip,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,strip,,,,,,,,, strip,,strip,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,strip, type of retrieve. I usually start off with long solid strips and a pause just to see if they work since they are alot less stressful on your stripping hand. I can cast 500 grain on a 10wt all day and right arm will feel fine but my stripping hand feels like I pitched a 12 inning game in the world series with it.

MemberI don’t get to fish to busting fish all that often. The topwater blitzes that everyone talks about when talking Striper is pretty rare at least in my part of the country. That said I’ve done it several times with mixed results. One time it seems as if anything you throw will draw a strike and others it seems like they know you’re there and laugh at anything you throw. I have even put fish down casting flies over them.
One very important key is to match the bait size and profile of the bait they are chasing. Catch and photograph a few of them and tie up some stuff to match them. The flies you mentioned should have worked unless they were way off in size. Next use a shooting head to so you can get the fly down. If there are lots of fish on the surface there are just as many below and usually the bigger ones are just below the school picking off the wounded baits.
Locating them in a lake would take a book. Best thing to do is hire a local guide and pump his brain. I’d hire a bait guide and tell him you’re a fly fisher. He’ll share more info with a fly fisherman then he would another bait guy.
It takes a little time to get Striper and Hybrid dialed in no matter how you go about it. IMO its the most fun you can have in freshwater on the fly.
