MemberThe wind screwed us pretty bad so we only got offshore for a half a day but it was constant action while we were out there. Fly fishing in 2 to 3′ seas in a 21′ bay boat is pretty much out of the question. I went to the gear offshore but in theICW it was fly only despite 10 to 20 mph winds. About two days into the trip I mastered wind casting as long as the boat was in the right position (no wind across right shoulder). FWIW the Sage Equator line on an Xi2 is like having a rocket launcher for flies. Making 70 to 90’ casts with medium flies or poppers with shrimp (tied crazy Charlie style) under them in that wind was easily doable. After a week of using it with a 7, 9, and 10wt setup I highly recommend it to anyone who fishes tropical or sub tropical weather.
BTW, STP had the Equator Line on sale for about $24!I gota admit that after this trip I’m hopelessly hooked on Tarpon. I’ve never targeted such a hard fighting and hard to land fish in my life! I had at least 12 hookups but only landed one small one around 10 pounds. The one I remember most was about 30 pounds. He exploded 6′ into the air as soon as he felt the steel in the fly. Seeing my line ripped from the surface and this magnificent fish shaking in the air with a perfect South Fl sunset in the background is an image I won’t soon forget. I’ll be back for more of that very soon.

MemberZach, I caught every fish I went after, most of them on the fly including a small Snook. I’d love to go back when the weather is favorable and get those Bonito on the fly. They’re just mini Tuna and pull like a freight train. Fly fishing in the blue water no doubt would have been a blast but the addiction to Tarpon on a fly just might be my undoing..
Dude, you have got to go try this somewhere!!!! If I was a young man with a law degree God himself couldn’t keep from living in South Fl.

MemberMike,
Are you the same guy who had been giving me so much grief about the salty stuff? 😉
Glad you enjoyed your trip, and great posts.

MemberBryan about the only grief I’ve ever had about salty stuff is that its to far from home. That could change however. The pollen in the Mucus City is hard on my entire family and the cold is hard on my wifes joints and mine too. She has Degenerative disk disorder and has had two operations so far and I’ve just been hard on mine. I could almost justify a move based on those two factors alone. 🙂
