Tie a small mono loop below the connecting wire. I was having similar issues with feathered game changers and started adding the mono loop and it reduced the fowling with no real affect on fly action.

I built a 9″6″ 7wt rod using a XEN blank and a carbon fiber grip. I built the rod to take on a steelhead trip and now it is my trout streamer rod. I love the rod and really like the carbon fiber grip. I am hard on cork handles for some reason so wanted to try the carbon fiber. It is not slippery at all.

Did you ever make this trip? I would suggest carrying a pack rod and carry it with you on all of your hikes. I did the trip a few years ago during a Spring with heavy run off. Most of the rivers were blown out but I still toted the rod and fished every chance I could get. While this runoff made for poor fishing it made for spectacular waterfalls. My best luck was just below Yosemite Falls. The background scenery is amazing fishing in Yosemite!
