Sounds like a great trip and some stellar permit fishing in particular. Very cool.

Great stuff Travis. There’s something special about fall fishing – my favorite time of the year to fish in the states. Looks like you have those musky dialed in.

Cheers guys, glad you enjoyed the photos. It was an awesome trip, and I’m still on cloud nine as I relive it in my mind.

Mike – let me know if you want any info in preparation for your trip. I will likely be returning next year as well.

Here are a few more shots:

And yes, there were small fish too:

Thanks guys. Brett, I checked the lens and battery contact as best I could, and I also switched lenses and batteries a couple time to make sure that the fault wasn’t specific to one lens / battery. Unfortunately, no luck. I dropped the camera at Canon last week to get the problem diagnosed, but it doesn’t sound good. It sounds like I’ll be in the market for a new camera. Anyone have a Canon body they’re looking to sell?

I hate the thought of having to take a back-up body on trips, as I prefer a minimalist approach, but I’m afraid a back-up body will be necessary for future trips like this. Or I’ll just make Stu come alone.

Great stuff Corey! Glad to see you had a good trip. I love that underwater shot of the dorado – would make a great photo for a table of contents.

Good stuff Mike. I love Northern MI. Any sign of steelhead yet? I expect they’re still a couple weeks away.

Cody is a great town, with plenty of excellent nearby fishing options. I recommend giving North Fork Anglers a call to check the current water conditions – their website is currently down. One of the members here on IA is from Cody, although I haven’t seen him post in quite a while. Maybe he’ll weigh in on the current conditions. In my experience, the Shoshone can be hit-or-miss, although when you hit it right, it can be excellent. It routinely gets fresh rainbows running up from the lake, so it seems that some sections of the river will hold heaps of fish, while others will have lower numbers. The locals should be able to point you toward the sections that are fishing the best.

Pop into North Fork Anglers (right on the main drag in Cody) and get some North Fork Specials – its a great local fly. Red has always been a hot color for me on the Shoshone as well – bloody Marys, copper Johns, and the mighty woooooorm have all been very productive.

There is a Sierra Trading Post outlet in Cody that is worth a quick stop if you’re looking for any outdoor gear.

Enjoy the trip. It’s a very under-rated destination, in my opinion. Beautiful scenery and great fishing.

When I drop 3 of the best on a product, I hope to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Nothing I have tried delivers, which jives with what David is saying about this market segment being a real tick on the scrotum of fishing photography.

You have a literary gift Brett.

I will echo the sentiments already shared – I have struggled with this same issue for years, and have yet to find a perfect solution. If you want a truly submersible pack, you have to go with a roll-top. Zippers inevitably leak if submerged for extended periods of time. That being said, you probably don’t need something truly submersible. I’ve found that when I take a dunking, I’m out of the water very quickly. The downside of a roll-top design is that it makes access difficult and time consuming. And, as others have already pointed out, the strap / belt systems on both the roll-top and zippered waterproof packs tend to be very poor.

For trout fishing, I have settled on using a quality backpack, and I put my camera in a drybag inside. The drybag is actually unnecessary, but I still use it for piece of mind. I have taken a fair few dunkings, and even though my pack is not waterproof at all, I have never gotten any substantial amounts of water inside the pack.

For flats fishing, I have found the issue even more difficult because ease of access is paramount when you’re surrounded by half a mile of water in every direction and no place to set down your pack. I previously used a roll-top waterproof backpack, but accessing my camera on the flats from inside the pack was a pain. The pack itself was uncomfortable, but not unbearable (I put up with it everyday for an 8-day trip). I recently purchased the Ortlieb Aqua Cam (http://www.ortliebusa.com/prodInfo.asp?pid=41&cid=2) to use on the flats, and I am quite happy with that choice, although I have to wait until October to truly test it. It is padded and is big enough for my 50D with lens, and a spare lens, although I don’t think a telephoto would fit. The industrial grade zip-lock style closure is robust, but also gives easy access to the camera. I will likely start carrying this pack on the river with me as well, in combination with a normal backpack.

Thanks David. Your post is very timely – I was just reading up on micro adjustment last night and decided that I need to have a play with it for each of my lenses.

I can’t speak from personal experience, but Fiji is a relatively short jump from NZ so I have done a fair bit of research on the fishing there and also know a lot of friends who have been. One of my good friends got into some great trevally in Fiji while there for a wedding about 2 years ago. He said that during the mornings and evenings the trevs would crash bait right at the water’s edge, but would largely move offshore during the day. Locals were consistently getting into some really good fish in boats just offshore, including routinely getting busted off by massive GTs. I can put you in touch with my friend if you want, just shoot me a PM and I’ll give you his email address.

Fiji is made up of hundreds of islands, and from my simple google search, it looks like Matangi Resort is on a relatively small private island in the northeast. I would guess the fishing could be quite good there, since you will be fairly removed from the large population bases of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

I highly recommend taking a 8-10wt with a floating line and some small-medium poppers for casting from the beach at trevs chasing bait in the morning and evening. If it were me, I would also pack a 12wt and sinking line and try to get out in a boat at least once. It is likely worth asking the resort about fishing options, as they very likely have someone that could take you out for an afternoon, especially if you stress the point that you will have all your own gear and are self-sufficient. Alternatively, the local Fijians are notoriously friendly and you very well may be able to talk a local fisherman into taking you out in his boat.

Brian O’Keefe did a photo essay or slide show on Fiji in one of the early issues of Catch Magazine. I don’t recall there being much useful info in terms of planning your own trip, but it may give you a bit of inspiration.

That action in the water is just down-right awesome. I have been a huge fan of articulated streamers for a long time, but this multi-jointed system takes it to a new level.

There are some really great photos on here. I realize now that I didn’t get nearly as much fishing in during this last year as I would have liked, but here are a few of my favorite photos:

Great photos Jeremy. I really like the perspective in the 2nd and 3rd shot.
