MemberOkay, here comes the neophyte fly fisherman question of the week.
What is a hex as it relates to fly fishing?

MemberAaron,
I just want to know how your able to get out of the house and fish so much, I have a wife that keeps an eye on the door at all times. 🙂
scott bullinger
MemberI seriously want to know how to procure a bottle of that scotch, I love scotch and must add that one to my collection.
scott bullinger
MemberHave received my flies yet?
scott bullinger
MemberThat’s odd, is it because you posted back to back quickly or because your post was so short initially?
Oh and Aaron, it’s a small thing but it’s Scott and not Scot. 🙂
scott bullinger
MemberBut hey, I did take the time to cut a wine cork into small pieces to place over the hook point. 🙂 Â
Hopefully you took time to drink the wine too! Â Not a bad companion to tying flies, I might add
For whatever reason, I’ve collected my wine corks over the years and have a 2 foot tall glass vase of sorts filled to the brim with wine corks (few hundred corks or so). Â Normally they just sit there looking all fancy in see through glass, but then I decided to cut one up for hook protection. Â Then recently discovered my scotch corks are great for holding flies after I tie them.
But alas I don’t drink wine while tying flies, Scotch is the companion of Fly Tying for me. 🙂  A nice single malt; either a Macallan 18, Balvenie 12 double wood, Springbank 21, Black Adder Blairfindy 1976 or whatever else is in my cabinet at the time.
Come to think of it, I think I need to do this tonight!

MemberI agree Aaron, I need a bottle of that scotch also.  In the lowland single malt variety please. 🙂

MemberThere is already a pic of an earlier attempt of mine in this thread, plus the recipe. Â Main difference between the pic and what you’ll be getting is that I hope the ones I sent look better and I used a black/olive hackle instead of all olive.
Aaron, you should be getting mine on Wednesday and I’ll apologize in advance for not attaching tags to each fly.  This is my first swap and I wasn’t aware that I should have tagged them with the fly name and my name.  But hey, I did take the time to cut a wine cork into small pieces to place over the hook point. 🙂
Edit:

MemberJust thought I would show what I’m working on, need to get my rear in gear to make the deadline.
scott bullinger
MemberSt. Louis,…Creve Coeur specifically.
scott bullinger
MemberThat’s a can do!
scott bullinger
MemberI ask because I tend to tie with a lead body, sometimes a bead head…sometimes no bead head.
scott bullinger
MemberI would jump in Scott. Â The best way to improve your tying skills is with a fly swap. Â It forces you to tie the same pattern over and over. Â It is amazing how well you end up tying it. Â I don’t think anyone would mind a simple woolie bugger. Â We all had to start somewhere and that is an effective fly. Â To tell you the truth. a lot of the flies I get in swaps are never used because I don’t want to mess them up.
Well, if you don’t think people would mind simple woolies then I’ll give 10 of them a shot. Â Looks like I better get cranking because I’m a little slow.
Now a couple of questions, so that I at least tie something people would like and use (I’ll do my best to make something swap worthy).
1) Size 6, 8 or 10 hook? (pretty sure i have #6 hooks)
2) Black or Olive?
3) Bead head or not?If people don’t mind some from a guy who has only been tying for about 3 months, I’m in.  So maybe people don’t feel cheated, I’ll throw in a #16 red thread zebra midge along with each one (simple and effective, they’ve caught fish for me).  🙂
scott bullinger
MemberI’d love to do this at some point, but the only streamers I can tie right now are your standard Woolie Buggers in either size 6 or size 8, black or olive.
