Clay SmithMemberJay,
I actually just got off a Disney Cruise with the family yesterday and watching the fishing (and scuba) boats haul out of Cozumel was not so much fun.
I’ve only been on a couple cruises and had similar concerns regarding late port entry but all of the tour/guide operators I have spoken with (both through the cruise line and outside) said they would work around our arrival schedule. We hit all our scheduled port times so I can’t say if they would have kept to their word they would have been but they at least seemed accommodating.
My tours have been limited submarine tours/scuba diving/deep sea fishing so can’t speak to how the fly fishing guides might be willing to work with you. I will say I was really surprised as to how much stuff you can do in the limited amount of port time. Having door to door transportation to a place you can step right on a boat with the motor already idling makes a huge difference.

Clay SmithMemberThose of you who know Zach personally will understand how kind he is being to me in his description. That combined with his awesome direction created a fun filled day.
No hookups today; but watching them try to crash the hopper as I artfully pulled it out of their mouth was an absolute blast!
Also very glad I could be here for the kickoff of Zach’s week of actually fishing.
Clay SmithMemberBeat me to death if I buy it. Not on my wish list-ever.
I’m willing to bet there aren’t very many people on this forum that haven’t said that about at least 3 items they currently couldn’t imagine fishing/tying/traveling without right now.
Clay SmithMemberZach,
I’m just curious if fly caught would include a san juan worm or a nymph under an indicator that I’m throwing with a spinning reel?
I don’t want to post a photo and get accused of trying to be sneaky.
Thanks,
Clay
Clay SmithMemberZach,
This is our last weekend to fish before the tailgate. Just saying.
Clay SmithMemberthat is awesome
Clay SmithMemberBob,
Venice, LA.
I thought I remembered if the River was high fishing wasn’t as good cause it pushes more muddy water into the marshes. So fall was much better for the Reds even though year round is great.
Clay SmithMemberMixing Aaron’s fly tying room with Zach’s fly tying article provides me an interesting visual. A sewing circle of 12 dudes would be very interesting.
Clay SmithMemberZach,
Exactly what I thought when I saw it (with the opposite emotional feeling of course) but then realized its a Mardis Gras thang. Although in Mobile it might be more of a Joe Cain thing.
Clay SmithMemberZach,
Kent’s website seemed to indicate a little winter action on the river.
I was also thinking it might be educational to take a couple runs on the river down near Franklin just to get familiar with the area before the spring spawning runs start.
AKA I don’t have a boat with a motor and/or I don’t want to float the hooch down here by myself 🙂
(insert call & book with Kent response here)
Clay SmithMemberWell heck. I guess now I gotta go bump up the White Bass conversation. April is coming soon.
Clay SmithMemberHey Zach its wintertime again and not so rainy.
Lets go gettem!
Clay SmithMemberI think the key is to understand what a shootout like this is and is not. I can’t think of many instances where any test like this doesn’t have a significant level of bias. Especially once they start including fun to fish/got to have as a category it lets you know that personal preference is 7% of the value in a test where the overall variance was only ~15%.
My personal take away is that excluding suitability of specific characteristics to a caster’s style there is no discernible difference in performance quality between the top 7 rods. If someone has an extra $600 to spend because they like a name or think it looks better then good on them.
Additionally, as long as we have forums like this I would never use a shootout like this to make a decision when I can discuss it here until somebody decides to take me out and show me the difference 🙂 But it sure does make for some fun discussions.
Clay SmithMemberJC,
Would love to try that but this canoe has the contoured seats so sitting that would be a bit uncomfortable.
Zach,
That snap in seat is a definite possibility-it also gives Bryce somewhere to sit when Pamela comes along but is removable. One of the main reasons I got this particular canoe is the space to stand between the rear seat and the thwart. Just need to get more comfortable and I’ll be trying it. What solution did you end up choosing for your stand-up paddle?
I’ve watched your the video you did on setting up a fly rod/reel it was very interesting. I typically use an improved clinch knot but I haven’t tied them much recently just need practice (but will definitely experiment).
That waterproof boombox is awesome-especially if I can find it for $40 as opposed to $150.
Hopefully I can get back on the water this weekend.
Clay SmithMemberyou in the gheenoe? Are you doing any drop off trips or just motorized?
Clay SmithMember
Clay SmithMemberFinally got the canoe in the lake. First time with the kid so no fishing but he did fine. Little nervous but overall I think he had fun. Hopefully I can get him back one more time this weekend.
