    Tail looks interesting.

What is Eastern Fly Fishing magazine like from a quality perspective?

The reason I’m asking these questions is I have a number of aviation magazines I’ve subscribed to that get repetitive where 30% of the content is rehashed and that is hard to discern from just grabbing one off the magazine rack.

    I appreciate the feedback!!

So my learning to tie list includes clouser minnows and crease flys.

I’m looking at the epoxy vs UV discussion and looking at what I plan to do I’m curious if there is any reason to consider epoxy?

Assuming UV is what I should go with my 2nd question is what brand would you choose?

Zero action on the lake Friday; based on the weather I wasn’t expecting much and that is absolutely what we got. But we had a blast just puttering around.

I did learn that getting 30′ of sinking line out of the water isn’t easy. I could get 20′ up with a couple of roll casts then false cast the other 10′ out and then shoot the entire head. Not sure if that is the right way to do it but it worked. I was only shooting probably 30′ of running line but still pleased with that for my first time on a boat.

Now I’m hoping it won’t be another year until I can get back on the water with a fly rod.

For me success is getting away from our hectic reality and enjoying time in the relaxing setting of nature. Combine that with learning about the behavior of animals in nature and it multiples my fulfillment.

Much like catch and release, the end result doesn’t have to be meat on the table to measure a hunting or fishing experience as a success.

I’d love to go. I just don’t know how y’all figure out how to get your trips in between the rain.

That’s great advice and I’ll sure use that.

Any guidance on what size/color stuff I might want to have with me? I’m not tying yet and need to go buy something to chunk at them and don’t have the budget to purchase 2 of every color and size.

I was thinking blue & white streamers and crease flies in 2 & 2/0 but just not sure.

Glad I can provide some input somewhere.

I feel bad sometimes just sucking fly fishing knowledge out of everyone here and not having the ability to give back. Not bad enough to stop doing it though 🙂

    Zach,

Regarding the rolls what do you use to keep them off the bottom? I’ve seen enough pictures to know I’m not in your skill class but I use one of these and it has significantly reduced my scorch rate.

    Zach,

Any idea when/if you and Tracy will be available for a multi-family float trip or is this year completely slammed?

    Kent,

Yeah great information thanks so much!

I spoke to the folks at Lawhorn on Monday and they take very small groups so at least for now that sounds like a solid option. Based on my limited experience Scout campgrounds are well equipped and maintained. For me the camping selection is largely geared towards a trip with my wife and 7 year old and those extra features can be invaluable.

It’s only an hour drive and I’m planning on doing this multiple times this summer. I will likely start with the Sprewell Bluff float letting Flint River Outdoors shuttle for us and as it warms up and the crowds get bigger look to shuttle ourselves. I’ve been watching the water and hopefully the weather cooperates and I can get out there towards the end of the month!

Regarding the float down from Hwy 36 how challenging are Yellow Jacket Shoals when the water level is 6′-7′? From some of the information I’ve heard I’m a bit tentative especially with the little one along and its always difficult to know if they are really difficult or just people covering their butts.

Thanks again for all this information.

    Zach,

Yeah I remember that story now. I was looking at the map and it looks like they have a boat launch at Joe Kurtz so that might actually be one of the launch points I use (regardless of where I end up camping).

What facilities did the WMA campground have? The boy scout camp has full bathrooms and a covered pavilion to eat under which will be important features when I sell this to the wife…

    Zach,

When I was a kid we would launch at a marina in Fourchon behind the Port right where LA 1 turns east towards Grand Isle; but we usually fished the marshes off Bayou Lafourche. It was pretty surreal taking a small bass boat through the port with the oil rigs and all the oil field boats towering over us.

Man thinking back I guess it has been almost 30 years since I fished that area. Makes me wonder what size those 5# speckled trout and 35# redfish I tell stories about catching actually were…

    Clay
