Jeff Hull’s recent book Pale Morning Done is pretty darned good, and Bill Tapply has a new one coming out called Gray Ghost.

Well, Bryan. (Any Monty Python fan will recognize that intro.) You’re both right and wrong. The photo certainly is flopped (not “flipped”), but the reason it’s flopped is to make GOOD layout design. To not flop the photo would lead to a bad layout. But let’s start at the beginning.

I had this story on night-fishing for snook that I wanted to run. The problem was that the author’s photo support wasn’t as good as I’d hoped it would be. It turns out, however, that there are very few appropriate images of night-fishing for snook out there. I struck out with all my usual professional photographers, and further searching turned up nothing. Of course, there are lots of full-sun snook images out there, but they wouldn’t work for this particular article. So, now I had to make a decision: do I kill the story or try to make do with the images I’ve got. I chose door number two. These kinds of compromises come up all the time in this business.

    Hey all,

It turns out that Steve Rajeff DID NOT win the Orvis-Saltwater Fly Fishing Casting Cup. We all thought he’d won, but he came in second to Jeff Wagner of Fort Collins, CO. On the women’s side, Rachel Finn, a guide from Upstate New York and Alaska, took the women’s crown. Both will be donating $3,750 to their favorite charities. I know that Rachel Finn chose Casting for Recovery as her charity, but I’m not sure of Jeff Wagner’s choice.

    Just an update,

    Hey Pancho,

Keep in mind that there’s lots of DIY fishing in the area, as well. Flat Creek runs through the Elk Preserve and offers giant, wary cutthroats. The lower section, south of town is easier fishing. The Gros Ventre can be good, as well, and there’s plenty of access. If you want to float the South Fork in Idaho (right over the mountains) and score points with the new wife, you might wanna hire a female guide from Reel Women in Victor, ID. My wife loved the experience of fishing with a super-competent woman.

As for Yellowstone, the water in the southwestern part of the Park will be getting warm by August. If you don’t mind the drive, head for the northeast corner (Lamar, Soda Butte, Slough Creek). About the same amount of driving in the other direction will get you to the upper Green.

Eat breakfast at Bubba’s BBQ, next to the Orvis shop in town, and go have a fancy game dinner at the Gun Barrel.

    Have fun.

    Phil
