Mike TolbertMemberThat’s cool Travis! Let me know how it works out for you.
Mike TolbertMemberThis was a great idea! I’m looking forward to next year. Congrats to all the winners.
Mike
Mike TolbertMemberAlan, you are correct. I was able to use them the way they are. For some reason my 6wt didn’t fit that well but if I jam it in it fits. I use some velcro straps to secure them while boating.
Thanks
Mike TolbertMemberBeautiful fish!
Mike TolbertMemberNice catch Bob! What kind of fish is that in the top photo?
Mike TolbertMemberAgreed. The second video is better. I would have maybe thrown in a little of “these boots are made for walk’in” during the dock walk scene just to add a little flavor. :).
Very cool!
Mike TolbertMemberZach,
Here’s the video. I started a new thread b/c I didn’t see this post first. I had a great time!
Mike TolbertMemberWow! That is awesome!
Mike TolbertMemberZach, I was thinking the same thing but I’m pretty sure the slot needs to be bit wider for the fly rood/reel to slip down into the tube. I don’t have a Dremel tool, but I do have a multi tool that should work (or I figured I could probably just cut it real slowing with wire cutters, but I’m starting to think that might cause a crack). I’ll try it with the multi tool first, then sand it down a bit before sticking the heat gun on it.
The only motoring I would do with the rod in the holder would be when I’m on water and not fishing. I never have rods in there when I’m hauling the boat to/from my destination.
I also considered making a gimbal rod holder adapter, like this….
http://www.marlinmag.com/techniques/rigs-and-tips/make-your-boat-fly-friendlyI figured I have 6 of the regular plastic rod holders (3 on both sides of the center console) and I could modify 2 or 3 of those and still have plenty of regular rod holders. I have 2 gimbal rod holers built into the sides of the boat for trolling.
Thanks for the feedback Zach & Jay! I figured you guys would chime in considering how you like to trick out your toys. ๐
Mike TolbertMemberJay, I am able to detach each tube from the base. I looked at the Blue Water Designs rod holder and they look good for $15. However, I doubt they would fit into my existing unit. That’s why I was thinking about just modifying my existing tube.
I thought the same thing about the suction cup rod holders. They are damn expensive too.
Mike TolbertMemberBig Laurel creek is known for good trout, and has plenty of roadside access
Travis, is this Big Laurel creek? Just wandering because that is only 2 hours away from me so I may want to give it a shot some day.

I guess it is still considered the Nantahala river at this point. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wayah+Rd,+Nantahala+National+Forest,+Topton,+NC+28781/@35.2470557,-83.6537698,20z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x885ecdbfcd5ed9e9:0xbb2901ad4b95f95b

Mike TolbertMemberEnjoyed listening to this one on my way into the office this morning! Kind of a bummer that Iceland rivers are mostly private/gov owned. Sounds amazing, though.
Mike TolbertMemberNice Pike! Beautiful river. What river is this?
Mike TolbertMemberTravis, I caught my first Striper on a fly rod. I caught this little guy on my 6wt.

Mike TolbertMemberWow! Beautiful lake. You weren’t kidding about the clear water.
Mike TolbertMemberOutstanding as usual Travis! Really appreciate the feedback man. Definitely have to hangout for the outgoing tide and try to catch some redfish. I’ll let you know how it goes…
This is going to be a very relaxed vacation (won’t be going 90 miles an hour like we normally do on vacation) so I’m sure there will be plenty of time to throw out the anchor on the sandflat and have some cold ones.
I was up pretty darn late last night, couldn’t sleep so I googled “Choctawhatchee fly fishing” and found some decent info and videos that got me excited. I just need to figure out what fly’s they like and I’ll be all set. Need to find some recipe’s because I plan on catching a speckled sea trout, redfish, or flounder to grill for dinner one night. Probably just end up using some lemon, thyme, etc…
Here’s where we are camping. We have a tent site booked in the Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike TolbertMemberAnd you know us menfolk love our bags and accessories… ๐ Looking good fellas!
Mike TolbertMemberTravis, you need to stay put! Leave some fish for of the rest of us, would ya? J/K, I’m really impressed with your skills and I’m sure your girls are impressed as well. ๐
Are you on the east coast? Where you at? I’m going to start stalking you!
Mike
Mike TolbertMemberThanks Mike L! September sounds like a good time. Less mosquito’s I’m sure. ๐
Mike TolbertMemberThanks R Black!
