I am a planner for the City of Knoxville and Knox County Tennessee, Am the sole employee of Riverdale Classics Bamboo.  I not only make bamboo fly rods but also make bamboo shafted putters for those old school golfers.  I toured for several years as a guitarist, also play bass and mandolin, just finished writing my first novel (hard core white trash suthrn fikshun), and make my own wine.  Married with 4 kids (three girls and one boy).  Spend my time between the Knoxville area and the North Carolina High country around Laurel Springs where my family owns a little place near the parkway.

I use single foot guides on all of the bamboo rods that I build.

    Bob~

I have seen a lot of pictures of some great years on this thread, but to see a man go through what you have and still keep the optimism needed (i.e. the grass trout), is not only evidence of a great year, but within your struggle is a life lesson that perhaps all of us should consider.

    In a nutshell…GOOD ON YA MATE! 🙂

If 1st person is the correct voice, then you have no other options if you want it to be real.

Here is my take on it….

No matter what voice you use, if it is honest, I mean totally honest, and the words are not laborious.  If you paint a picture that will take anyone who reads it into the scene, then you as a writer have done your job.  The greatest of writers are not those who just place the words on the page, they are the ones who offer insight into everyone who is involved in the story.  Wendell Berry (my favorite Author), can write a short story about a day spent in the tobacco patch and when you are finished reading, it is as if your back were sore and sunburned.  Real honest assessment of the human condition regardless of the situation is what draws in the reader and leaves that lasting impression.

    2008…..

Got my Bamboo business up and running.
Welcomed my fourth child into the world.
My best friend and fishing buddy made it back from Afghanistan safe and sound.
Stood in one spot on the Holston in a driving rain and caught over fourty trout.
Caught my first Trout over 25″.

My biggest fish gleaned from the smokies was caught in October about 3/4 of a mile up from Metcalf Bottoms.

No picture but my fishing ride is called “The Trout Tank” a 1995 Chevy Corsica 4 door, 197,000 miles, paid 150.00 for it.

My overall favorite Smokies Rod is a 7′ 4/5 wt. bamboo that I built.

The only time I use anything close to a 6wt is when I am high stickin through rough water, or streamer fishing the lower areas.  The rod I high stick with is a 8′ Heddon bamboo that is rated a 5 or 6 wt.  I load it with 5wt and do quite well.  Having said that,  a rod of that size would be considered overkill on most of the good trout water of the park.
