    Hi everybody.

I went to a local auction over the weekend that was advertised as having “many bamboo fishing poles” and I was not disappointed. They were mostly spinning rigs and big bait casting set ups but I managed to score, what I thought to be, the best boo in the lot, a 60s Hardy Neo Cane 8′-6″ 6 weight.

Its a beast of a rod but casts really smooth. She is in great shape with only a few minor minor chips in the varnish, it really was a find. No sock or tube, so the colector value isn’t high but then again I’m not a collector.

This is my first bamboo rod and I think its a good place to start.

It doesn’t have snake guides though, can anyone explain why it might not have snake guides? The guides are all full circle guides, its kinda strange.

There were a few more fly rods there. None really interested me enough to wait around. There were a few shakespear fiberglass rods, and one graphite. There was also what appeared to be a home made no-name bamboo 3/2 4-5 weight in a rod tube. But who knows how well made it was. It looked ok… but you never know. This guy had

Here is a pic of the boo, notice the tip section doesn’t have snake guides.

Does anyone have any ideas why they would put circular guides on instead of snake?

Although still capable of being used as a conventional fly rod your Neo Cane appears to have been wrapped using what would be described as coarse fishing eyes, or similar to our spinning rod eyes. They act like mini stripping guides so actually work well for shooting line, it looks to be in excellent condition, how does it cast?

I use single foot guides on all of the bamboo rods that I build.

Hey Marc do you have any photos of the rods you’ve built?
