Jay’s points are well made and there is no doubt the D700 is an amazing machine for all the reasons outlined in his post.
There are a couple of things I do to make LR work faster for my workflow, which during this time of year is edit wedding shoots from around 900 images down to 200-250 followed by processing, all of which is now done in LR.
Personally I don’t use the highlight priority feature on my canons and aside from shooting a lot of fishing and landscape stuff I shoot a ton of weddings and believe me the white dress is the first thing to go blinky.
It’s been a long time since I’ve used a version of Elements but I believe the new version includes some sort of browser like Bridge in Photoshop.
Amen to the price comment above, not to mention finding good labs that still process film, especially E-6.
Ditto everything said so far, but I would reiterate Adam’s advice on shooting when the light is great.
I’ll echo the shout for Fat Tire. I have fond memories of going to the owner’s house (he brewed in the basement pre state of the art brewery) to pick up 5 gal. kegs for happy hour when I was a student in Fort Fun back in the early 90s. Right now I have a soft spot for Switchback Ale, brewed in the fine state of Vermont where I live.
