Kent EdmondsMemberKeith,
I suppose you talking about trimming the little corner off at the back of the wing. It certainly can make a difference, depending on how big a corner you cut. If you cut less you will get more of a dive & a bubble trail, plus more of a wiggle on the retrieve.I must admit I have changed the shape of the foam a tad from the original template and now I cut the whole thing in a smooth curve. But when I used the other template, I just barely clipped the corner. Yours seem to have a large piece cut out – that will make them more aerodynamic, but at the expense of action.

Kent EdmondsMemberThanks Neal – glad it works for you. And yep that one is fully pimped.
Oh, and Keith, I wouldn’t worry about getting mono thread for the SB. Standard thread works fine & looks better. I expect you had that suggestion from Steve Davenport – he likes using it because it

Kent EdmondsMemberHey guys. I know this is a photo-related topic so I really don’t belong, but if you want the info, foam template and tying instructions on the stealth bomber it is on my site here – http://flyfishga.com/stealth.htm.

Kent EdmondsMemberZach, is it necessary to re-register to change the handle? If not, I missed that option on the User CP. I have only 1st name as posting name, but always include full name on sig – kosher? Don’t know hat eitf I used full name in registering or not – can’t see that either.
Thanks –

Kent EdmondsMemberDon’t know whether a carp line will sell or not, but the “alternative species” are pretty popular these days. On my website, excluding of the entry page, my gar page is the most popular on the site. Below are the respective visits per page for 2008 ytd. Carp are almost as much fun as gar, so Rio may have a winner……..Now you need `em to make you a gar line, Zach.;)

Why the rope fly works

Gamefish!

Zach fights one

Turn `em loose (they’ll leave a little slime)

Or some say they’re good to eat

Kent EdmondsMemberZach, practically any outboard can be converted to a jet. All outboard jets (Merc, Yam, Evinrude….) use pumps from OB Jets in California (they just re-paint them). A pretty simple conversion – drop the lower unit, swap out the drive shaft and bolt on the jet pump. I converted my Merc to a jet with no prior experience – couple of hours at most.

Kent EdmondsMemberZach,
Like they say, shoal bass are very different than redeyes. Check the Alabama DCNR site.
The real place to fish `em is on the Flint – a native fish in its native environment. That’s never been stocked! Where in the US do you find that? Well, about an hour south of Atlanta.
And while they may feed mainly on sub-surface bugs and crustaceans, they are black bass at heart – they’ll blow up all over a topwater. And they do it in what looks just like trout water. Here’smy Flint page.
If you’re wanna, email me & we’ll go do it in the spring.

Kent EdmondsMemberAndrew, I’d like to see that semi-circle deal – an interesting idea.
Fact is, like Drifter says, big bugger work fine. Basset, I have used a wooly worm in years gone by, but if you note the photo, the bug is 2″ long.
`Tried many variations, including Murray’s; even tried simulating gills with antron, glow-in-the-dark flashabou, and various othe concoctions. `Have no idea whether even a perfect imitation would be more effective as they jump all over the standard WB. `But you know fly tyers – always tinkering.

Kent EdmondsMemberHere’s the real thing from the Flint, as Drifter mentions-
A really distinctive feature is the set of filamentous gills all along the abdomen. You can see them a little in the bottom view, but they are big, billowy white things that almost glow when the bug is in the water.
When they get washed into the current, they curl immediately into a circle.
The bugger has always worked fine for me too, but I have wanted (and tried unsuccessfully) to mimic the gills and the curling behavior.

Kent EdmondsMemberHey guys. It’s pretty hard not to find gar in this part of the country. I catch `em on the Hooch, the Flint, & the Coosa & Tallapoosa over in Alabama. Crazy fun…..

(The rubber band on the rod butt is to stow the hookless fly). It’s a little hard to find, but there is some info on the flies on my website – http://flyfishga.com/gar.htm
Here’s why the rope flies work so well…

At least half the fun of gar fishing is the big question they inspire as you get `em to the boat………..

Kent EdmondsMemberMike, the shoal bass fishery on the Flint is quite unique. The one question about your timing would be early spring rains. That is prime time but the river blows out pretty quickly with heavy rain.
If you need a report as time gets close, let me know – I fish it a lot.
