MemberOnce you get to Troy, have breakfast downtown at the diner. Pancakes are highly recommended.
I’ll give that a try – I’ve always stayed in Libby before, but not this time, so I will be looking for breakfast around there as well.

MemberThank you all for the responses – with any luck I will be back many more times and can try several of them. Frankly, I would love to retire in Bozeman, but pretty sure I won’t be able to convince the wife.

MemberMy son worked there four summers back, and we will be staying again in August. I second your recommendation on Campfire Lodge. If you don’t believe it is “close” to the Madison – check out the photo below shot standing just outside the back door to the dining room.

MemberI think it is true with many things in life that once you get to a certain level of quality or performance, a small gain can often be very expensive. How much better is a BMW or Mercedes than the latest offerings from say, Hyundai? If you use and like tools, are Snap On tools that much better than Mac or even Craftsman? Those are only two examples, yet people are more than willing in many cases to pay the extra $$. Why should fly rods be any different?

MemberWell, here’s another late comer to the discussion. I would want to know exactly what you mean by “small stream”? Are there lots of trees, brush, and overhanging plants, or are they relatively open? How big are the fish? I went the short rod, fiberglass rod, route at one point. Now I fish ultralight rods. The small streams I fish are relatively open and the fish average 6-8 inches. I found a 3 weight was too much rod – when the fish attacked aggressively and I set the hook, they would often go flying out of the stream and sometimes I would lose them behind me somewhere. My current choice is a Sage 00 rod – a wild 8″ fish is great fun to catch, and I’ve landed a 13 incher with no problems. The downside is they are not cheap.

MemberThanks everyone for the input – very encouraging!
John Williams – I will send you a private message to continue the discussion re: Makoplasty off the board.

MemberI would check out the Faithful Street Inn. The have some condos as well as some much larger units that will accomodate a lot of people. The owner, Glenn Bell, is also a great guide. I’ve fished with him twice and highly recommend him. http://faithfulstreetinn.com/ http://flyfishwestyellowstone.com/
