MemberLMB are a blast on the fly, especially top water. There is a lake close to my house where I try to catch a Missouri Pan fish slam: bass, blue gill, and crappie all on a 5 wt rod with the same fly (an olive wooly bugger, of course.) I have an old Loomis megataper which is 8’6″ and casts and fights fish very well. I would be interested in both the Sage rods, but especially the lighter one for bonefishing on a windless day as I have a small arsenal of 8 weights, already. How much are they running and why would I want to buy their line especially if it is not intended for hot salt water?

MemberI’m Jeff Morasco (Nom de keyboard is Loopy). I am retiring this fall. I live in north Missouri and plan on spending about half the year on Grand Bahama. Actually I am looking to get away and try some trout fishing next summer as I have almost no experience doing that. I also have been playing with two handed rods and might try my luck next fall going for steelies.

MemberThere is basically no camping permitted in the Bahamas.
In the Freeport area you might be able to find a room in the $100 per night range, rental boats would be expensive and limited for your purposes, guides are about $400 per day. There used to be house rentals in the Abaco out islands that came with a small boat. If that is of interest I can look around and see if I can find an ad for you.Jeff Morasco
MemberThanks for the website. It should be handy for anyone visiting the islands. All the guides were on Abaco excepting one from Exuma. I can’t speak to any of them from first hand experience.
Considering the discussion above, local knowledge would be my first choice, recommendations from fishermen on the web would be second and this would be third. I think most of us prefer DIY, but when making a first time trip to an unknown destination, any information helps.Jeff Morasco
MemberI stand corrected. Obviously they were not adequately prepared. The usual scenario is that you are picked up at around 7, so that you start at the dock at 8:00. Granted that island time is relaxed but three and a half hours is inexcusable.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was no training whatsoever, depending on who was supervising the approval and what the alleged qualifications of the applicant were, or the relationship with the supervisor (nepotism is a way of life there.). I’m not familiar with that program being active on Grand Bahama. Do they have a contact person in Freeport? I took a quick look at the Orvis website and didn’t see anything about it.Jeff

MemberZach, I’m glad you had such a good time with Deep Water Cay and sorry that you had such a poor experience with Pelican Bay. I don’t think there is any “American” guide service as such and I don’t think you can fish out of Deep Water unless you own or are staying there. In other words you can’t register at any other hotel and expect

MemberHi again Zach,
I think it is pretty unusual to see that many huge schools of bonefish rather than singles, doubles, or much smaller groups. Casting to large singles is more the norm than the exception for me.
If I am using a guide, they are strictly Bahamians. You might let me know who the individual you got on the third day, (he would be an oddity that I would like to avoid.) For most Bahamian guides this is their business and much of it is based on repeat ‘clients’ and word of mouth.

MemberNo, I was thinking I was back in Missouri working when I should have been there fishing. Sorry if day 3 wasn’t as memorable.

MemberWatch out, mon; that fishing can be addictive. Sorry we couldn’t get together, especially after reading your report.

MemberThere are large mouth bass, blue gill and crappie in every lake close to you. You probably will find some with channel cats and carp. For trout you will have to travel to Bennet Springs or other Mo. trout parks.
